Hello everybody.

Firstly I would like to say what a great forum this isLaughing.

My 10 year old Weimaraner bitch Remi, was diagnosed with an Osteo Sarcoma 3 years ago, aged just 7.  After a few days of trying to decide what to do for the best, we opted for amputation of one of her hind legs. Our Vet was worried that being such a large dog, she would not cope well.

There was a hole in her leg bone, nearly 3/4 of the way through so we needed to come to a decision quickly. Our vet did not want to biopsy it as the bone was weak, but he also advised us not to walk her.  She was miserable not coming for walks so I knew deep in my heart, she had fight left in her.

So, she went in and had the amputation. The Vet phoned me and asked me to go and collect her as she was barking because she wanted to come home.  He xrayed her chest and at the time it was clear.

After a few teething problems post op, I started her on loads more vegetables, and supplemented her meals with cottage cheese and flax oil. We gradually built up the strength in her other leg and made sure her weight was down. Since then, we have not looked back. It was 3 years ago today that she had her operation. I didn't opt for chemo on her either. After having it myself, and never feeling so poorly, I couldn't put her through it.

I also have 4 other Weim bitches and a Norfolk Terrier. We go out every day and although Remi is now slowing up, and I know the cancer is on the move, every day since that day of diagnosis has been a bonus.

In the park, everybody knows us and the only thing that she can't do now, that she could before, is counter surf!  She has been so brave, and our Vet says she is an inspiration.

So, when I work out how to put a photo on, I will, and I just wanted to say to anybody in the same situation, that speed is of the essence from diagnosis and even large dogs do cope with loss of a limb. The dog has no problem with it, its other people that have hang ups.

Thanks for commenting about Remi! My best friend Winston is a Weimreiner.

It's so good to hear that Remi has beat the odds of osteosarcoma. And yes, we agree that every day is icing on the cake. Thank you for sharing.
