Three Saturdays ago our 8 year old, black and tan Miniature Pinscher was bitten by a passing Pitbull. It was early morning and Wolfgang AKA Wolfie had just finished his walk here in New York City. He was in the vestibule on his way inside but his leash was on the ground. A pitbull passed by with his owner and Wolfie ran out to him. I wasn't there to witness this-I was at work. Wolfie not being the aggressive type, does on rare occasion slightly nip at a passing dog. He is otherwise very socialized and friendly. The pitbull bit into his shoulder, lifted him off the ground and shook him, then just as quickly released him.

Wolfie's shoulder was so badly damaged that it needed to be amputated-his front right leg. Gosh, I never realized that he would survive and walk again without a prosthetic or without rehabilitation. After the first two weeks of him constantly sleeping, he has recovered well and we are all quite calm regarding this traumatic event. We are lucky that our handsome little Wolfie is still here among us and if he doesn't mind about his situation, then neither do we.

We are looking into purchasing a new harness for him and looking around for other needed supplies. Happy to have found this forum.

Thanks for reading!

I am so glad to hear your Wolfie is doing well.  How scary for you to go through this.  Keep ys informed on how he is doing.  Isn't it great how wonderful dogs do on three legs!

Thank you for your welcome. I see Emily's picture-so beautiful. Sorry for your loss. You probably know the Doberman Pinscher and Miniature Pinschers are distant cousins-bred up and down from the "middle guy" the German Pinscher. Both yours and mine are Black and Tan in coloring-my favorite. smile

hi wolfie, welcome!!  sorry to hear you had such an awful experience, but i'm guessing there are some 'fussy' dogs out there like there are fussy people.  glad you are doing better... having three legs is really quite allright, as long as you have the right pawrents, and it sounds like you do.  get yourself all healed up, and don't forget to ask for extra treats and take plenty of naps!!.  gayle

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

Hello Charon and Etgayle, thank you for the welcome and nice to meet you. Yes, we get lots and lots of naps now a days! While Wolfie wasn't getting up to eat much during the first two weeks, the food was brought to him. Steak bits, salmon, hamburger...smiley

Welcome to Tripawds,

And to the really unofficial small Tripawds club.  I call my Maggie a Tri-pug.  So you can be a Tri-pin, or Tri-min-pin?  We just had a Tri-pom join the other day.  Mag weighs in at about 15 lbs now- she is a rear amp.

I hope your healing continues to go well.  There is tons of great information and support to be found here.

Oh Wolfie, you have lived up to your strong name. We are sorry about the attack, but very, very glad that you are alive and thriving. What a scare you must have given your pawrents (not to mention how much this must have scared the heck out of you too!). We're just so glad you are healing and on the road to recovery.

Your size is such an advantage when it comes to being a front leg Tripawd. Your pawrents will see that you'll do just fine on three legs, without a prosthetic! Be sure to check out our canine rehabilitation exercise videos, and also our Gear Blog, where you will find lots of helpful harnesses and other cool stuff.

Thanks for joining us here and sharing your story, you're already inspiring others with your courage!

Welcome Wolfie and Pack,

It's great to hear Wolfie is doing well.  He looks like such a cute little guy. Lot's of attitude I bet. Sorry to hear about the bite. I have a deep fondness for pits. Because of this fondness it hurts me to say that just yesterday a very good friend of mine lost her pup of 14yrs, Granite, to an attack by a Pit named Ozzie. In short the dogs were neighbors for years but not allowed contact. The gate to Ozzie's yard was shut but not latched. My friend could not separate them. It's very saddening, Granite was a special boy. I'm sorry, this is outside the scope of this site. I just found out not 30 minutes ago and needed to vent i guess.

Sorry Wolfie, this is your post. Your one very special MiniPen and lucky too. I look forward to hearing more as you continue to recover. Maybe some pictures too!!!! big-grin

I'm so sorry to hear about Wolfie's attach and aputation, but I'm so glad to hear that he survived the whole ordeal. He is so adorable!! Once Wolfie recovers from his surgery (about 2 weeks), he should do just fine. My german shepherd's name is also Wolfie! Short for Wolfgang... He is Jake's brother... Jake lost his leg due to bone cancer, and is no longer here with us... but his legacy lives on!

I wish you and your Wolfie all the best... Looking forward to reading posts about his progress... Try to post some pictures of your cutie!!!

Angel Jake (and Wolfie's) Mom

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!

Fortis,

I'm so sorry to hear about your neighbor's dog, Granite. What a sad story... crying I just watched a show on TV about horrible pit bull owners, and the people that try to save them and rehabilitate them. The owners should be the ones put to sleep, not the innocent dogs!

Anyways, I just had to say that...

WELCOME WOLFIE and family of course!  First my recurring suggestion….look into the Ruffwear Harness…an absolute lifesaver for me but Magic is just a titch larger.  One of our  long ago wolfdogs was named Wolf because we couldn't figure out what we wanted to call him so started out calling him the wolf and it stuck…

It sounds like you are already through the first two weeks (hell week and its cousin 2nd hell week) and are well on your way!  It is amazing how well they do….much better than their pawrents!!

Although you are lucky to not have to go through the cancer treatments, there is a lot of good information here and wonderful people who are so supportive.  Come regularly and keep us posted about Wolfie's progress
