Hello folks, looking for more advice. This coming wednesday will be 2 weeks since Gus had his surgery, it seems the last couple days he has had more occurences of phantom pain . In the evening it might be every hour or 2, and some during the day. They don't seem to be quite as severe as they were a week ago, but more in numbers. I am suspecting that is what it is as once he stops crying he licks the incision, always at the bottom of it for awhile ,but not constantly. Would this be considered normal. He is still on gabapentin and Rimadyl. We will be going to have stitches out tomorrow but your own experiences have proven to be the best sources of information. His appetite is good, and he seems comfortable in between these spells, although I think he would really like to lay on the side the surgery was on at times. I notice people saying once they have been off the pain meds they do better also, how long have most people kept their dogs on the meds. Thanks for everything, Gus and Dan
My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010
Is Gus still on medications? If so what? He may just be getting strung out on the meds. Also, have you tried any of the phantom pain tips we linked to previously ... massage, warm compress, etc? Does he have a firm, comfortable bed? Hopefully Gus will get over these outbursts once his stitches are out and he's off all the pills. Good luck and please keep us posted.
