Good luck today Gerry and F.M.  I never thought about how cancer would make the amputation less intimidting but I am sure you are right.  With cancer it is not an option really, is it?  My thoughts and prayers are with you guys.  I am so happy you got some time off work to be with Gerry.

My cell phone finally registered the message about 15 minutes ago! All I really know is that they said the operation went very well and he is off IV fluids. I'll be getting another update tomorrow. Thank dog I finally know something! He was so scared at the vet today and had an accident in the car, which the shelter folks warned me about, but we hadn't had that problem yet. The car trip was probably just a little too long and it had been too cold this morning to give him a long walk. Oh I hope he's drugged up enough not to be freaking out over being kenneled. I'm assuming there's no way around that while he's staying with the vet.

Thanks for all your well wishes and prayers! So far, so good!!

He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

Can he jump? I once went to a vet to pick up Orko (my first 'fur thing') who similar to Tazzie tended to imbibe on whatever was at hand. This time I thought he had consumed two weeks of antibiotics for a 230 lb deer! (I found the pills under the car seat a few weeks later.) Anyway, after having his tummy pumped, the vet staff found him walking loose in the clinic. They had an 8 foot high exercise pen, with no top, and had assumed that would be high enough to prevent an escapee. Apparently not.

Anyway, glad you got an update and that things went as expected. Phew!

Great news!  (The part about the surgery going well, not the part about the accident in the car.)  Hopefully they will keep Gerry sedated enough he won't care he is kenneled!  Keep in touch.

So glad to hear that Gerry's surgery went well. I'm sure he's totally doped up with meds and doesn't really know too much about what's going on... Do you get to bring him home today or tomorrow? I'll bet you can't wait to get him home so you can start loving and spoiling him!!! Be sure to post tons of pictures on his blog!!!

The date was on the calendar, all the positive thoughts we could pull together were sent, and now we are very relieved to hear that the surgery went much as expected.  We will continue to be putting you high on our thought and prayer list.

Gerry is reportedly still doing well today and the plan is that I will indeed be able to pick him up around 12:30 (Central Time) tomorrow. I can't wait!!!

I keep trying to remind myself that he may not be his usual wiggly self for quite a while, and more importantly, even if he is, I need to keep a lid on MY excitement and set a good example so we can have a smooth and speedy recovery. I sure do remember how long these first two weeks are. I guess I'll see if those weeks go any faster the second time around and let y'all know.

I don't know if the two weeks will go faster this time around.  Maybe slower because you are comparing it to Yoda's amputation and thank goodness we tend to forget the struggles. Well not forget, but the edges blur and our anxieties don't seem to have been as strong as they were at the time.  Or maybe that's me.  My husband always has to remind me Emily had to adjust to being a tripawd.  I practically have her running the Kentucky Derby before she even got her stitches out.

Anyway, thanks for updating.  I sure have been praying for your new boy.

Thanks so much Debra!

You know, since he doesn't have the big bandage Yoda did, I think Gerry's getting around quite a bit easier than Yoda did. And/or being a rear-leg amputee rather than a front-leg amputee appears like an easier adjustment, but it's not exactly a scientific study I have going here. I was excited about his energy level too, but then I had to roll my eyes at myself that I had managed to forget about energy dip that is to come in another day or two - how could I forget! Would have been hilarious if I posted in a panic about it after I've assured so many others that it was normal, haha.

Anyway it's so great to have him home - of course. He's being a very good boy about leaving his incision site alone and eating and napping. Eventually though we'll have to put the ol' cone on just in case. Though the cone they sent us home with isn't quite as good for staying on as Yoda's was... good thing I still have that one!

Post amputation pictures are up in Gerry's blog, but his glaring at me made me stop after just a few.

I'm so glad to see Gerry made it home.  Even though the first few days, there wasn't a lot of sleep for me, I was gled to have my baby home where I could watch her.  I'm still not believing you are doing this again so soon, and by choice!  What an awesome advocate you are.  Yoda taught you some great leassons, obviously.  Of course, Trouble and I are sending you all the best healing thoughts for a speedy recovery.

The pictures are great!  Even the glaring is cute.  What a guy.  Looks like he's been three-legged for awhile, so the transition should be easier.  I'm so glad he's home where he can be spoiled (and photographed).  We send healing thoughts too.

It is interesting to see someone go through this a 2nd time. You do seem to remember some things and probably the back leg will be easier. I'm not sure if I'd find it any easier. We always worry about them when things aren't perfect. Good idea to turn your furniture around!

Give Gerry a big hug. I Love those ears.
