This is the best I can do at the moment. It's a really old pic of my boy, but he's just got a bit more great on his muzzle now.

Fawkes had his surgery yesterday. He came through it really well. The vet looked in the joint after the leg was removed and said there was a lot of arthritic change and it looked angry - consistent with what he expected for a deep seated, chronic infection. He cultured the fluid again so that if the infection comes back, we will know what we are dealing with. It has already been cultured three times with no success so I hope this grows this time.
I hit the jackpot when I found this vet. I called the clinic at 7am and he'd already been in to check on him "earlier this morning"! He's not working today and he's actually gone out of town. He checked on my boy before he left. Admittedly I have a small crush 😉😄
I can go see him later and maybe bring him home <3

Bring who home? The vet or your dog? Preferable both Sounds like you have a great vet. I hope Fawkes likes him too.
Let the healing begin Fawkes!! You are very handsome, I look forward to more photos.

YAAAAAAAAAY!!! SURGERY IS DONE!!! Such a relief:-)
Now, we tried to prepare you for bringing Fawkes home, but I don't think we anticipated you bringing the Vet home until KAREN pointed that out! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Not sure if he will need raised food bowls or not! Short leashed potty breaks may just be a bit much!!
Try and get some rest, okay? Fawkes is happy seeing lots of pretty pink elephants!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
The first night home went really well. Fawkes only has a fentanyl patch and it seems to be managing the pain quite well. Thank goodness he can tolerate the fentanyl!! I've heard so many horror stories about it. Prior to surgery Fawkes was taking nearly 1500mg/day of gabapentin and still in significant pain. I'm hopeful the surgery did remove the source of the pain.
I'm at my parents' house right now as the surgery was performed at a specialty clinic 3 hrs from my home. We will be going home today. There are a lot of stairs here and I found that Fawkes was completely exhausted during his last potty break so I had to carry him up two flights of stairs to bed. He kept staring at the door threshold and was really uncertain about trying to navigate it. Poor baby Once I got him to the bed though, he settled himself and went right to sleep <3
My home has some stairs, but he can go outside to potty from both levels so I hope it won't be as tough on him. My plan is to only bring him up to bed at night and down in the morning. Do stairs get easier? I'm worried that he may always be tippy and about to fall.
He hasn't eaten much since the surgery either, but he is very thirsty. Did anyone else notice similar? I don't recall that from previous surgeries.
Thanks!
Tanya & Fawkes
Stairs are different for every dog, Novak was pretty quick and was ok. I let him take them 2 weeks post surgery. Getting down is easier than going up. Novak, has to have momemtum to climb lots of stairs, so if he is standing at the bottom of them and go up, it will be harder. But, when he runs for them, he's ok. But for now, you should carry him down and up, its too soon for stairs. It has to be short potty break in leash. And even then, use the harness to help him support his weight if needed. It will prevent fatigue and seroma . Novak did have a little bit of seroma (he's so active), but on the forum, few have experienced it more.
For eating and drinking, I suppose its different too. Novak ate a lot and drank less, but still was drinking.
How is he today? Fentanyl had no effect on Novak, or even gabapentin or tramadol. I never saw any difference in him, but I kept giving it to him following vet instruction. Oh and he also got deramaxx, and never saw any change either. Of course he was confortable, but I don't know if without those meds, he would have been confortable??
