Yes, I have seen the SCARY comet teeth (come on, her teeth cannot really be that bad - no dog's teeth can be that bad, can they??) until today. I hit reload and now have a picture of a comet looking sweeter than ever (with no teeth visible - I guess she forgot to put them in that morning), but no Comet mum.

Metacam is supposedly harder on kidneys, Rimadyl harder on liver, at least that is what I recall. If your dog does not have kidney issues, they'd probably consider metacam as being a bit easier. We stuck to metacam despite the kidney issues (better the devil we knew, bad kidneys, than the devil we did not know (bad liver).

Are they giving IV fluids to Don, or is that not needed. One thing that I did was boiling up heaps of vegetables (mostly broccoli, some cabbage, carrots) and giving Tazzie the water they were cooked in (I had to put the vegies in the compost, for he got sick if he ate that broccoli). But the fluids were great in bringing his kidney values down. Be careful of pre-packaged vegie or chicken broth. They have too mush sodium they will not help. Sounds like he is improving.

Yes they are using IV fluids on him - actually they left a needle in his leg so I will be giving it to him at home through next few days.

He still wants to drink lots of water (thanks Tazzie, will try with the vegetalbe water too) ,rejecting food as well, but wants to eat when I feed him,but can see he is having nauseas. Guess there isnt much to expect after 1. day of treatment. But he seems very down, can sleep well, during day,and through night until 5am in the morning, when usually starts vomiting, something nothing and sometimes just a yellow bile. Could be either from nausea or he is actually hungry, but I am trying to feed him many times a days with at least a few bits, and just before he gets to sleep so can get through the night but think its too long for him anyway.

Well, cant say I see any significant improvement, his life quality is going down rapidly, but as far as I read its a tough disease to deal with it,specially with his primary one,so will try do what I can and see. Love him to much to torture him for too long but on the other hand from same reason dont want to give up entirely without fight after all he has been through.

You might want to send a PM to Maggie the pug to see if she has any tips. She might not have seen your posts or know that kidney issues are involved. It sounds like her dog's kidney issues are even more pronounced.

wow.  When I look at my plate and then look at yours.....You are an amazing mom Daniela and Don is so very lucky to have you.  I don't know if this is helpful or not, but along with my newly minted Tripawd, I have a nearly 17 yr old kitty who did three years of chemo for a cancer they had never had in a cat, and in Nov was diagnosed with kidney failure.  I stick a needle in him daily and give him fluids...it isn't his favorite part of the day, but he is still cranking along.  He had a couple of issues this week and has lost some weight and I know we are moving toward  the end  of his journey, but not just yet!!!!  I have been told by other folks in the waiting room at the vet that they have done fluids for their dogs and it was a piece of cake.  Your Don sounds like he has put up with a lot in his lifetime and just isn't ready to give it up yet!!!

I shall follow your story with great hope and prayers for you

Daniela,

I really hope that Don starts to feel better soon... I know that with kidney disease... things can go downhill very quickly. But you are doing everything you can to help him...

I am sending you and Don a big loving hug!!!

Daniela

I am so sorry to hear your news about Don after all you have been through together. I know how sad you must be, and respect how you put Don's feelings first in making this difficult decision. You've been a wonderful Mum to Don.

Dear Daniela,

Even with your 5 posts, you and Don have touched us just as deeply.  You had a brave soldier in Don.   And you as his mother did an amazing job with him.  The love you, two shared must have been incredible.

I am so very sorry.  We all know the hurt but it doesn't make it easier for you.  All we can do is be here for you and hopefully comfort you through dark days ahead while you heal.

And although Don is gone in body, his spirit will still be here amongst all of us.

Lots of wuv and wags,

Comet's mom

I am speechless.  My heart is just breaking for you.  Don was so lucky to have a home where he was loved so much.  I am so sorry and my prayers are with you.  Thank you for sharing your boy with us.

Daniela, I am very sorry your boy lost his battle.  His journey has ended, but you must keep going.  It will be lonely, but his spirit will guide you.  Don, like the others before him, is a warrior and a hero.  He will forever live in my heart.

I so hope your sadness will soon be replaced with only the beautiful memories of your special boy.

RIP sweet Don.  Run free at Rainbow Bridge.

Don was such a beautiful Golden boy on the other side of the planet, who we were just getting to know. This was such sad news to read about.

He will be missed tremendously by many, many Tripawds around the world. May his spirit shine on forever.

Thank you all so much for your kind words, they really mean so much to me now at this difficult time. It has only been a day he is gone, and I miss him tremendously. I know life will need to go on, and I am sure he wouldnt want me to suffer, and probably just looking at me from somewhere and thinking - why the hell you cry I am doing great and watching over you -   but guess it always needs some time for heart to heal. And only people that have been through similar situations can know how that feels like, for many other that is "only" a dog.

So even though we dont know each other for very long, you have already done so much for me with your wishes, thoughts and sympathy. And after a little while I am sure I will be back here to do the same for someone else that will need help, advice or just a kind word.

You are all lovely people and I wish all the best to you and your lovely companions. I so wish that one day medicine will go further and help cure this nasty illness that took so many of our loved ones to early.
