I have a tripod dog. I found her during a TNR program that I was involved in. She was living in the werehouse we were using to store and wash the cages. She was orrigionally found on the street and kept in the werehouse for safety. The girls doing the cleanup work would come and let her out 4 or 5 times a day. I thought that the werehouse wasn't good enough for a puppy. It's warmer and safer than the street, but all dogs need a loving home.
I said I'd take her untill she was adopted. Little did I know that it would end up being forever. I already had a dog and really didn't want another, but she grew on me to the point I couldn't part with her. I'd put a lot of effort into training her and dealing with her phobias and issues. The bum leg was the least of her problems.
Her only having half a hind leg due to an old injury as a small puppy according to the ver. She was still a small puppy when she was found, maybe 10 weeks old, so it must have happened when she was very young. It didn't slow her down one bit, but the half leg was annoying to her and she'd sometime hit it on the ground when she was racing around top speed. It needed to come off.
We had it fully amputated at the same time as her spay. One of my vets happens to be an orthopidic specialist and he did the surgery.
Because of her extreeme phobia of cars and getting car sick just sitting in a car she couldn't travel by car. We had the vet keep her an extra day and we walked home after surgery. It was a long 2k walk, but she did it without any problems.
We are now quite well known in town. Frequently kids see her and comment that she is to be pittied because she's missing a leg. I use this as an opportunity to explain that she is happy, healthy and loved to bits. Her lack of a hind leg doesn't bother her at all.
Dogs live in the moment and don't stress about what they don't have. My dog has everything a dog could ever want. The dogs they should pitty are the ones in the pound without a family to love them. I let the kids pet her and my other dog and they quickly realize that they are both just normal happy dogs.
She is now 8 years old and is perfect in every way.

Wow, what an amazing pup! Thanks for joining the forums and sharing this story.
That's what we're all about here ... teaching the world that life on three legs ain't so bad.
