My BOOMer just had his right front leg amputated after sustaining a traumatic injury and the vet left his scapula, shoulder and part of the humerus intact. It happened this past Friday and I have to say I read your story about the Boom and not only did it resonate with me but it also gave me hope. I have already spoken with 3dpet to get things lined up. My BOOMer is 3.5 years old and also climbed many a mountain and loves to backcountry ski. I was wondering how the Boom is doing and if he is continuing to increase his distance and tolerating moderate trails?
Woah! Another Boomer? Welcome, Marc! Please start a new topic in Hopping Around if you want to ask these mobility questions to the community, and so we can get to know you two better and follow along with your story.
And I'd love to know how Boomer 1 is doing these days!
HEY! long time no speak. we have beeeeeeen busy.
Boomer is doing great, we are just a couple weeks shy of being one year!
Marc, the distance and activity will depend on the dog, mainly size and weight. My big lug is a toughy for sure. So he tries his best. Not the distances we once did, but he does bite off as much as he can. I even changed his diet to try and ensure he stays a trim weight to ease any joint problems up front. He still "sprints" outside without his prosty while in the yard, mainly to tell the neighborhood dogs they still suck.
Probably havent had him out as much as I should have to increase distance, but now that weather is changing for the better I can get back to that if work slows down.
I did however manage to modify his prosthetic from a stiff leg to a piston-like spring resisted setup. To absorb impact and make it easier on him. The first 2 outings went great. He did increase speed with it, which was cool. That let me know it was working with a desired effect of being easier on him. I switched phones, so will have to post those pics and vids later.
