I am an owner of a beautiful 6month old Tripawd Doberman girl named Athena. I able to be home daily as we begin this journey of recovery and a happy healthy life together. We share our love with my husband and two teenage sons.
Athena was let out into the side yard to play and took off out of the yard into another neighborhood. She had done this before and always returned. When she did not return our search began, lasting 5 days of Athena being missing. She was finally heard in her cry of distress by a gentleman I had given a flyer to. He found her not far from home trapped by her paw in a barb wire fence cutting circulation off in her foot.
And so began our battle of trying to save her foot. Never did we imagine it would come down to her loosing her whole front right leg as rot began to set in she had half her foot removed. The rot did not stop there but her foot continued to die off. She already had a Webb foot and then we were faced with the struggle of, "could she have a healthy happy life?", with the council of our wonderful vet & his staff we made the decision to take on this journey with Athena, and I am glad I did! Having her leg removed and keeping her with us was the best decision for our happy puppy girl! She has thrived and endured with such strength and working with her has been one proud moment after another!
I hope to share many more milestones as we go along this journey of Athena's Tripawd life!
Hi Athena and family, welcome! We are SOOOO sorry about your awful accident, that is just tragic but wow how wonderful she was found and survived the ordeal.
Of course she can have a happy healthy life on 3! We have lots of folks here whose dogs lost legs for similar reasons, check out our "Beyond Cancer" forum for some inspawrational stories. Also, our e-book, Loving Life On Three Legs , has lots of great tips to help keep her strong for life.
Please thank your vet from us for giving you the scoop on amputation and life on three legs. If you think they would like some of our vet outreach brochures, just holler OK?
Thanks for joining, we can't wait to follow along with your adventures.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Ok...I'm going to try this again since my "reply" went off into Tripawd cyberspace somewhere...
Welcome Athena and Family!!!
I'm so sorry to hear that your sweet Athena had to undergo an amputation. After such an experience I'm glad that she was able to survive and make it home. There truly are earthly angels all around and you found one with that Good Samaritan who reunited your pack. There's many here as you'll come to see as well. Please don't hesitate to ask questions as so many of us have been on the journey that you and Athena are just starting.
And like your family my husband and I are BIG Dobie Lovers too!! Our first purebred and Tripawd was Leland (the one pictured in my avatar). Sadly we had to let our boy go June 30, 2014 when he was 4 1/2 years old. Lucian is our current pup. He's 105lbs and coming up on 14 months old. He's quite the handful with his puppy antics and chaos...lol...but we love him anyway. Here's a recent picture of Lucian....
I look forward to following Athena's adventures and would LOVE to see some pictures of your sweet girl!!
