You folks are beautiful. We think Gus had cancer, did the biopsy, and it came back negative. The vet said he took samples in 4 places, but we weren't waiting any longer as he hadn't been using the leg for a few weeks. At first we thought he had pulled or torn a muscle, we live on a farm and had alot of crusted snow at the time, and he is very active, jumps with no effort at all, so figured he had hurt himself that way, but he was starting to hurt pretty good, I said no more, do it. You could see he didn't have the pain right away after the surgery, but when these howling spells started, I knew something was up, and as good and strong as his back legs are, I didn't figure he would have any problems with this, so I'm hoping it is something temporary, I can see he isn't quite as spry as he was a few days ago, although he has looked better this afternoon, I'm hoping being off tramadol is part of that. Thank you everyone for your support. Oh yea, I can sure relate to the sleepless nights people talks about also.
My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010
Oh yah! Sleepless nites and sore backs (at least those of us with big doggies). But, none of that really mattered to us at the time... We didn't care that we weren't sleeping well, or that our backs felt like they were broken from helping them get around with their harness, etc. If I had to do it all over again, I would in a second! Just seeing Jake's smiling face after he went for a swim, or just ate his favorite treat, or had his belly rubbed... It was all worth it, for sure!!
I'm glad that Gus's path came back negative... at least you won't have to worry about that! If he is otherwise healty and not overweight (if he is... start working on that!), and he has no complications from his surgery... he should live a long and happy life as a tripawd!
Hope that you can post some pictures of your Gus soon... maybe even start his very own blog so friends and family can keep up!

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
We're so sorry to hear about Gus's leg, but that's great news that he doesn't have to deal with the dreaded C-word on top of that. Please give him a big tummy rub or behind-the-ear scratch for us! We know he'll just amaze you with what he can do in the coming weeks!
Go Gus!
Hugs,
Holly and Holly's mom
Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Well, the vet said it was still likely he had some cancer even though the biopsy came back negative, but he felt if it was that we got it early. I think it was a good move to take him off of tramadol, his appetite is better and his nights have been better, still some whining, but he seems more comfortable, will try to get a picture of my buddy up, I have to wait until my daughter is over, computers isn't one of my strong points!!! Thanks for your support

If necessary, have her review these instructions for adding images to forum posts, and details about how to upload your profile avatar (the small photo that appears under your name at left). We look forward to seeing Gus, and are glad to hear he's doing better.
