Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the group, our dog Toby (about 9 years old) had his leg amputated about 2 weeks ago because he had soft tissue sarcoma and the vet decided to take it since we were going in every other month to get the lumps taken off. It's still a road of recovery but he is going great, he has adapted quicker than my husband and I, I'm assuming that will come with time. I am grateful for the site because it has helped us with a lot of questions we had, we are excited to see our boy run and swim again, 🙂

Hi Brittany and welcome!

two weeks in and he's running and swimming? Sounds like you're doing great!! That is good to hear!

As for the adapting: the other day I was drying my dog off with a towel, bent over him to dry off his front right leg which is: exactly! not there anymore...yes, I did feel stupid 🙂 and yes, dogs are a lot better at adapting than us!

Now, you do know that we always ask for pictures here, right?? 🙂 So, please! We would love to see Toby!

all the best

Hi Brittany and Toby!! You are still VERY EARLY in the recovery and Toby still needs to take it easy for a bit longer.

It takes about two weeks to "recover" from the surgerynitself (it IS major surgery) and abput kne month to get mobility issues figured out.

But yes, he will be swimming and running before you know it! You may want to check into getting him a swim vest (check out Gear link). Some dogs use them and it does help with their balance.

You can also check out exercises you can do to build core strength.

Would love to see pics of your sweet boy! Keep us updated.

PS...Tina! Cute story about Manni!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
