Man, just can NOT catch a break here! My foster, Tipper is having a surgical correction next week to her amputation last year. Basically another amputation to shorten the femur. Past few days I've noticed another foster, Comet, obsessively licking his foot. Okay, I know he needs a nail trim and Rottweilers are so phobic about their feet. So I took him to the groomer and I discovered that one of his nails isn't just long, it is actually detached from the nail bed!!! Today I called my vet and I have to bring him in tomorrow, they think there's a good chance he might have squamous cell carcimoma and will need hs toe amputated! Anyone ever had that on their dog before?
Oh ouch! YIkes! I hope you're getting a bulk discount from the vet. I'm so sorry!
Roxy's peeps wrote about their pack member, Kali, who was diagnosed with this. Here is her post.

I haven't heard of toe amputation due to squamous cell, but in my readings on Mast Cell Tumors, I did come across a few cases where dogs needed toe amputations. I'm assuming it would be easier recovery from this surgery than from a full leg amputation, but hopefully it won't come to that.
Sending you good wishes for a negative on that nasty C-word. Sounds like you could use some good Tripawds juju right now!

SCC of the toe is fairly common in dogs and if caught early amputation can be curative. It could also be a nail bed infection/osteomyelitis but either way needs amputation. The biopsy will tell you for sure but you might want to consider a chest xray first just in case there are already mets.
