Our 9.5-year-old warrior Gus just came home from a hind leg amputation after X-Rays revealed Osteosarcoma on Monday. From his eye contact, he's definitely happy to be back with us, but his tail isn't wagging -- Is that normal? Hoping it's a product of his surgery and epidural, and that we'll see him spring back to his tail-wagging happy self soon.  Any comments would us navigate this new world for us.

Hi Gus and family, welcome!

I'm so glad he's home and surgery is behind you now. If he just came home today I would say that's pretty normal depending on what kind of pain management he received. What meds did he get? How much and how often?

Staying on top of pain control, and staying ahead of the pain so it doesn't spiral, is so important during recovery. How is his eating? Is he able to get up and go outside to urinate.

Most dogs are out-of-sorts for a few weeks but things really do get better!

Remember, you're sweet Warrior Gus just had major, major surgery and probably still has lots of Hospital pain meds left in his systemSo not surprising at all that he is not up for tail wags, or much of anything at this point.

Did he spend the night at the clinic or was surfery done today and he just came home?

As Jerry noted, what pain meds is he taking now, dose and frequency? How much does Gus weigh?

Drinking and peeing are important, but he may not feel like eating much for a couple of days and he may not poop for a couple of days.

Generally, not always, but the sparkle starts to come back heading into the two week Mark and after stitches are out. You'll see a little bit at a time at first, and then all of a sudden he's back to his normal routines.

Stay connected and keep us posted, okay?
