Just got the news today that a dear little pony that boards at our barn has Lymphosarcoma. She had surgery last Friday to remove her eye and the tennis ball sized tumor that grew behind it. Vet seems to think it has mestisized although she remains happy acting normal and has a good appetite. Her owners are heartbroken. Chemo will not be in the picture. Was a stretch to get the surgery and chemo on a large animal would be exorbitant. They are hoping to give her the longest , quality life they can. Would any of the supplements that have been mentioned on here work in larger quantities for equines, I wonder? They are predicting a year. I say no way cancer you are not going to get this little pony. She has spunk. her name is Betsy. I won't post on her often , as she is a pony and not a dog or cat, but just thought I would give an update here or there on her progress. Lori and TY
TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.
I don't know much about ponies, but I bet some of the supplements would help (though maybe $$$). I would at the least provide the very best diet as possible. Make sure where she grazes has no chemicals and any grains or other supplemental feeds are organic, no BHA/BHT. Probably no more vaccines & watch what topicals they use (fly repellents etc)
So sorry to hear about your friend's pony. I know she is loved as much as any of the dogs/cats on this board!
I wonder if the vet will Rx steroids for her, for dogs & some cancers like lymphoma, prednisone is used as a "poor man's chemo" & can sometimes lead to remission.

Sorry this is haplening to Betsy and family. But I KNOW you will be a huge supprt to them. Goodness knows you can teach them to "Be More Dog /pony"!
Penny (Maggie, Blink and Hank) may have some insight, as well as Luanne(Shooter) Bot have horses inntheir family.
PLEASE do keep us posted, okay? Let Betsy's family know we are sending positive enrgy their way. And please remind them....ponies don t come with time frames stamped onntheir butts!
You're a very caring soul Lori!
Hugs to all ..
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I'm so sorry to hear about Betsy. This disease does not discriminate in what it goes after...people, dogs, cats, horses/ponies, etc. I'm sure there has to be supplements/holistic approach for treating equines. Actually I just remembered when I thought Leland was dealing with cancer I was referred to this site from a place where I was getting a supplement to build up his immune system. The company is called McDowell's Herbal Treatments and they're located in Australia. The herbalist even called to speak with me because they didn't have a treatment geared specifically to Synovial Cell Sarcoma so they created Leland his own special blend. McDowell's has different treatment for horses. Here's the site that will lead specifically to the horse portion of what they do....

I didn't have any trouble getting the items I ordered and we communicated via phone and email.
Hope this is something you're friend will check into.
And please keep us posted on how things go with Betsy. I don't think anybody will be upset that she's not a dog/cat....

May you finally be healthy and running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again my sweet boy!
Just looked more closely at the McDowell's site regarding horses and they have a specific protocol for Lymphosarcoma in horses.

Darn I'm sorry to hear about Betsy! I know nothing about horses but I do know there's lots of great supplements out there for them. I'm glad Sahana was able to share that info so you could pass it on.
And we welcome all species here so no worries, you can always let us know what's going on with her. I hope everything works out great and she stomps cancer's butt with one swift kick!
