So my outside dog Mac was limping when I got home from a trip out of town. He also stopped eating.  I took him to the vet, they found a fresh cut, bandaged it and sent us him with antibiotics and pain meds. Fast forward 2 days, he chews his foot to the bone. I'm talking, it was mutilated when I got home from work.  So one back leg amputated, and we come home.  A week later his other back foot starts hurting. Now he starts walking on 2 legs, and we go back to the vet.  They test him for several things and take x-rays. Nothing, so they test him for a fungus that another patient had last year (which that dog chewed her toes off).  This comes back negative friday.  My baby is in pain and it breaks my heart.  I am going to talk to the vet Monday.  Wondering if anyone has any ideas.  Obviously, the same thing is happening to his other foot that happened to his first foot. No other symptoms. He is an outside dog in the Texas heat and we live near water. There is no snake bite.

WOW, thats a puzzler. Since he only had a cut on one foot it would suggest that was not the cause. He's an outside dog--could it be related to a tick- or mosquito borne disease? Heat and water also make me think it might be some kind of bacterial thing? And the antibiotic they prescribed wasn't the right one to take it out? Do you have a cone to keep him off the other foot? Is he on grass that gets treated with any chemical fertilizers or pesticides? Does he have any allergies? Could it be a yeast infection?

That is all I can think of. Hope his remaining foot is OK!

Oh my gosh! That must be so scary, I'm really sorry.

We have a member named Bud who deals with vasculitis, a painful condition that affects his paws. Did they say anything about that condition?

Hopefully your vets will send his labwork to the awesome Aggies at Texas A&M. They have one of the best diagnostic labs in the country. Ask if they will send his labs there and if they aren't, request that they do. The more experts you have working on this the faster he can feel better. Poor pup!

Absolute shot in the dark here, but we had a dog in Texas that was allergic to Bermuda grass.  He licked every spec of hair off his body that he could reach.  All he had left was a mane, his snout, and his ears.  It was not a good look.
