My seven yr old Great Pyrenees was diagnosed Saturday with osteosarcoma in his right front leg. We are to have a chest X-ray tomorrow to determine if the cancer has spread to his lungs. If his chest is clear we are going ahead with amputation. I was very worried about his quality of life after amputation, but after reading the many success stories on this site I am encouraged that he can live a full life.
Best wishes for your pup! What's his name?

Recovery is nomoicnic for a good two weeks or more (or less)! Every dog is different. Generally though, some of the larger dogs need a bit more time to recover and get their sea legs.
The first weeks are just avput rest and potty breaks...more rest and more potty breaks.
You'll want non slip scatter rugs over hardwood for traction . The Vet will send you home with Tramadol, Rimadyl and an antibiotic and Gabapentin. Some dogs come home with a pain patch as well. Getting the right balance for your pup may take a bitmof tweaking, but you and your Vet will sort that oit as you go along.
What's your pup's name? How much does he weigh?
