Hello - my tripawd springer pup (9 months old) lost one of her back legs recently, just before she came to live with us. The toe nails on her remaining back foot wore very short. So I've been using a sock & boot and/or walking her only on grass for a while to give the nails a chance to recover - they are now looking good except for one which has split lengthways (so we are off to the vet soon). It must be extremely painful for her and I'd like to help it heal and avoid it happening again. I haven't lived with a tripawd before so I have a lot to learn. Are toe nail problems common and does anyone have advice about how to keep toe nails in good condition please? I've noticed that wearing a boot obviously protects the nails from wear and tear but seems to make walking and running even harder work for her, makes her very hot and means she can't sweat enough to cool down. I expect it's a question of balancing terrain, weather, time of walk and working out what's best day to day. Thank you.

A boot can certainly help. And depending on how recent theamputation was, you may just need to focus on some strengthening and balance work before walking too far. Bookmark Jerry's Required Reading List for lots of helpful links or download the e-books for fast answers to common concerns.
Best wishes! Please keep us posted. Your future forum posts will not require moderation.
