Susie had her right front leg and shoulder amputated due to a very rare and aggressive cancer on January 5. Cancer cells were found in the biopsy of the lymph nodes they removed, and two oncologists at the veterinary hospital said we might want to consider chemo. However, because Susie had clearly had enough of veterinary hospitals, I opted not to put her through it. And here she is, nearly 10 months later! I am so proud of her! (Thanks to Elton John for the lyrics!)

Hooray!  I was wondering how she was doing, since we were together earlier in this journey.  What great news!  Congrats for Susie!  I hope she continues to defy the odds!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Way to go, Susie. You are looking great!

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Way to go!!! Great job Susie!!! You look marvelous!

Shelby Lynne; Jack Russell/Shiba Inu mix. Proud member of the April Angels of 2014.

October 15, 2000 to April 8, 2014

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Awwww...thank you so much, everyone! This is the best group EVER! I had a scare a couple of months ago when one of paws on her hind legs got red and swollen...but her new vet did a culture right in the office, and it turned out to be just a yeast infection!

She also was diagnosed with rear legs that slip in and out of their joints at the knees, and that's the reason she sometimes has trouble with even two or three stair steps. I am giving her glucosamine so her arthritis doesn't become worse.

I am so in awe of how well so many tripawds cope with life on three legs, and how they take each new challenge in stride.

By taking Susie out (to pet shops, etc.--you might remember that she LOVES shopping!), I've let her become sort of an ambassador. Everyone always wants to know how she lost her front leg. The other day, I was in a pet shop and a very sad-looking couple asked me that question. After I told them, they let me know that their own dog was just diagnosed with cancer and they were having to make the hard decision of whether or not to amputate. Their dog was a little older and quite a bit larger than Susie, so they were hesitant. But I let them know about this site (the woman wrote the URL down on a piece of paper) and gave them my business card, and I also told them all about Susie's journey. I think it helped them, because they thanked me over and over. Also, they're going to see a very good vet here (the one I have been taking Susie to lately) to get another opinion.

Just by being the plucky little survivors they are, our dogs can help so many people cope with their own issues. I wish I could be as resilient and brave as Susie! She is such an inspiration to me.heart
