Stump irritation. What to do?

Hi,

I have a 10 year old 40ish pound dog that had her leg amputated in February. She has healed very well and has been getting around just fine. My concern is that her stump is very irritated looking. The skin is red (she is black and white so the white skin is very pink). It is not swollen and doesn't seem to bother her very much, but I was wondering if there was something I could put on it to help her? She sometimes has a hard time with stairs and falls on her stump so I am sure this doesn't help. I am in the process of getting a ramp

Is there a sock of some kind? Or a padded thing? Some sort of contraption? Or should I just suck it up and let her toughen up on her own?

thank you

How much of a "stump"? Front or rear leg? Partial amputation? Hemipelvectomy?

Falling can be prevented with proper rehab conditioning and frequent strengthening exercises.
