My dog Angel had her left hind leg amputated 2 weeks ago due to osteosarcoma. The first week she slept a lot but was not too concerned as she was healing. Angel started going for short walk. She was also making great strides in her recovery. For the past couple of days we can't get her to walk. Is there anything we can do as parents to help strengthen her remaining back leg? Angel did not have much of a appetite after surgery, which I heard is common. We grilled chicken and it gets mixed into her kibble and now is eating. She is having no issues with going #1 or #2. I am concerned with her lack of energy. Also what are signs that Angel could be in pain? I have heard panting is sign of pain. She is off her pain medication... thank you Patti & Angel
Hi Patti & Angel,
Thanks for joining us, your future posts won't require approval.
I'm sorry to hear about Angel's diagnosis, but as you can see, many dogs do beat those odds and do very well for a long, long time. It's wonderful that overall she's doing great. Being tired is common, it takes a lot of work to learn to get around again.
Yes, there are plenty of things you can do to strengthen and increase stamina! here are some tips that will help you help her get there:

Hi, Patti and Angel. Recovery isn't exactly easy for our pups. But they've been through a major surgery. I had to keep reminding myself of that whenever I felt like Molly J wasn't doing well enough. She had always bounced right back from anything. Those first 2 weeks were the hardest, with many ups and downs. Now, we're past the 3 week point. As far as strengthening her remaining back leg, I'd let her guide you. My girl let me know when she was ready to spend a little energy on play. When we walked in the yard on the leash, we took our time, sat down for a few minutes, and then moved on. We've been able to increase activity these past few days, with a few minutes of fetch in the yard a couple times a day, and even went for a splash at the creek yesterday! Patience and small steps back to normal win this race. Those links to Jerry's required reading will be helpful. Positive energies are being sent your way.
