hi, my boy had his rear right leg amputated 5 months ago and now through being a tripawd has hurt his back. He is now unable to walk at all. we are carrying him out to the toilet but he is in so much pain he just shakes and cannot go. He has been on bed rest since thursday and anti inflammatorries and pain releif. he just lays in his bed. i am going back to the vet at 8am tommorrow morning. has anyone had or know can tripawds recovery from spine surgery like other dogs? we are so behind the times where i live in Tasmania Australia, there are no pet chiro physio or rehab centers and no one to help other than the vet. I really need any advice or knowlege in this area please... thanks in advance. Paula.:)
Hi Cougarman, welcome. Your future posts won't require approval so post away.
I'm sorry to hear about your pup. What's his name And why did he lose his leg? I know you must be so worried. Poor pup. Tell us more about him, we'd love fo learn about your pack.
This could be so many things, it's hard to say. It's not uncommon for something like this to happen and often it's because of too much of the wrong kinds of activity. What was his daily routine like just prior to his injury? What do you think might have caused it?
Typically R&R and good pain medicine will do the trick. He does sound like he needs more pain medication though. What is he taking? I would definitely ask your vet for something stronger so he can rest and you guys can figure out what's going on.
Also, have you tried gentle massage and ice packs for a few minutes, several times a day (always use a towel with the packs). That can also help him feel better.
Try not to panic; surgery is something that you do once everything else has been ruled out and hopefully things won't get to that point. See what your vet says and if at all possible, a second opinion from another vet will help your peace of mind. I know it's hard when you live in a remote location, but you are doing your best and your pup knows it too. Be strong for him, you'll figure out what this is.
We'll be waiting to hear what your doc says so please keep us posted OK?

hi,
and thanks, his name is Cougar he is an 8 year old red kelpie. He had his leg amputated due to a bone cancer. about 3 weeks ago he went speeding outside and i heard him yelp and he had been struggling since. i thought it may have been a return of the cancer. i took him to the vet and they said he seemed fine as he was fine the day i took him in. so home he came and went downhill. last week i took him back and they did blood and urine tests. both returned clear. he has gone down hill dramatically this week gone from limping to fully unable to stand up unassisted. he is on bed rest and meloxicam (anti infammatory) once a day and tramal twice daily. going back tommorrow morning to see vet as should have seen an improvement by now. we were going this afternoon because he was yet to urinate since friday but since has. thanks so much for your time and caring. Paula.:)
Oh gosh! So sorry you are going through this!
Guess the vet will do xrays of leg and spine, etc. And yes, if at all.ppssible, get a second opinion if you are not satisfied with this one. I'm sure the vet will also check out remaining legs thoroughly to make sure no torn ligaments, fractures, etc.
YAY FOR PEEEE!! That is good news! How about his appetite and his overall attitude?
Keeping all laws crossed over here for Cougar! He certainly seems like he has been living life to the fullest! Keep on rocking Cougar! We'll look forward to your update!
Hang in there! This will get sorted out and Cougar will be in the road to fully healing.
Hugs to all!
