I hope I am in the right spot. Scarlet “Scoot”
is our 3 legged 2 year old rescue. We got her as a pup that had just lost her leg.
she blew out her only back knee. The vet said to get her a leg brace off of Amazon and bring her back in 2 weeks. So he can put her under and look better. Keep her up as much as possible.
my question is how the heck do you keep a brace on a dog that doesn’t have the other leg to hold it up?
I sold my boat to help with bills and I plan on getting a fitted one if he says to. But need to do something now!
also I bought a $100 soft brace and ordered it to small. Maybe, that’s part of why it don’t stay up. It is a OrthoCanis
Any help or advise is wanted
Hi Scoot & Dad, welcome! We are sorry that you are dealing with her mobility issue. It's a tough one that is unfortunately all too common in Tripawd dogs.
my question is how the heck do you keep a brace on a dog that doesn’t have the other leg to hold it up?
Has your vet seen the brace that you purchased and approved the fit? If it's not sized properly it can do more harm than good by causing abrasions/pressure sores, or just not staying up as you are experiencing. The OrthoCanis brace needs that other leg to stay up, I don't think it will work. Your dog needs a brace that can stay up on its own like this Orthopets knee brace which doesn't require another leg.
Please consider making an appointment with a rehabilitation therapist, asap. The Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit and we can help you find a therapist if your vet cannot refer you to one. Let us know OK?
