Sammie is our 18-month old Black Lab. He is a new rear leg amputee. His rear leg was badly damaged from being hit by a vehicle this past Friday. We call him the Survivor because he survived for 2 days and 2 nights after he was injured. It was a miracle that we found him since he was 50ft down an embankment covered with brush, but one of play buddies led us to him. Everyone was looking for him and praying for him. We live in the mountains and he's a very social pup, so everyone knows him.
We've never had a 3- legged animal, so this is new to us. We have 3 other dogs and are wondering how they are going to receive him. He's been away from home for a week - missing for 2 and at the vet for care for 5, so they have not seen him. Is there anything special that we should do or just let them re-acquaint themselves when he comes home?

We have two other dogs in addition to Emily. We also worried about how they would react to her but they don't even seem to notice. At first they seemed a little protective of her but two weeks later everything is back to normal as far as they are concerned.
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
I also have four dogs and wondered how the other three would react to Cemil's "difference". When he got home from the hospital, he gave them a light growl of Please be careful and don't hurt me, and then all was well. They are careful around him and now, 4 months later, he wants to play like they used to--chasing, jumping up and body slamming, but they take it very easy. That's the only difference I've seen.
I'm sorry about what happened to Sammie--what a miracle dog he is! May he have a speedy and complete recovery.

Jennifer, thanks for finding us. We are so sorry about Sammie, but what an incredible story. He is a real survivor! What mountains doyou live in?

We all worried about what other dogs would think about our Tripawds, but our fears were unfounded. Right after surgery, dogs might act differently because of the scent from the surgery goop that's left over on their fur. And they can of course sense that something is "different," and some might stay away. But for the most part, the biggest issue that new Tripawds have around other dogs is overdoing playtime too soon after surgery. Try not to let Sammie get too wiped out. He needs his rest, and you'll need to make sure he doesn't bust open his stitches.
Other than that, chances are you're going to see that other humans have a bigger issue with Tripawds than dogs do!
