Nemo is almost 6 weeks and hasn't figured out how to get up on his paws. He has developed into a swimmer pup and that is probably due to me naming him. Maybe I'm expecting too much too soon. I have his back legs hobbled so that they don't stick out the sides and that has worked up to a point. He can't seem to figure out how to use his only good front leg. Any advise on getting him to learn how to balance? How long do other pups take to learn this adaptation?
Nemo gets very frustrated quickly and I feel so bad for him.

Do you mean he is six weeks old? If so, he's pretty young. I don't have experience handling a Tripawd pup that young but I'm sure others here do.
What do you mean you have his legs hobbled?
Has he seen a veterinarian to talk about his physical challenges? I would strongly suggest seeing a rehabilitation therapy vet to ensure there is nothing serious going on.

I had a tripawd born with deformed leg! But I got her at around 6 months old. I don't know how she was at birth or six weeks. But I remember we had one here that was born with a deformed leg and she said she moved about like a big tripawd when she was born. They learn to hop rather fast.

I don't know what you mean by hobbled either but if you are banding it's back legs together, please don't without a vet approval! Â

I understand the confusion. It's a new experience for me and the vet.
So, he was born 6 weeks ago with a "special" front leg that he is unable to use. He became very fat from mommas milk and didn't learn how to sit or stand using 3 legs. He became a swimmer puppy, which is when they are flat with legs out to the sides. In a 4 legged pup if u hobble the back legs, they should pull them up and not be flat which teaches them how to walk. But he's only on 3 legs and still can't figure out balance.
I was wondering if any one had any ideas on teaching tripawds balance. We just took the hobbles off today to see what he would do without them. It seems like the back legs are starting to straighten and strengthen but he lays on his chest and pushes around.
I am going to try a towel around his tummy today.
The vet is in on everything too. We see him once a week for updates. But we are stumped. We are thinking just more time.
Besides this, he is a perfect cavalier king Charles pup that I think will become a great therapy dog for a local hospital here.

Yes, this reminded me of the puppy in the trash story too. I hope Nemo can figure it out. He sounds adorable. Love those Cavalier King Charles pups.

Just an update on nemo. I think he's about seven weeks now. After using the towel and taking that stupid hobble off, he's hopping like a normal tripawd! Don't get me wrong the hobbles helped teach him to bring his legs forward but you have to work on the rest yourself.
He does best in the grass and am currently teaching him how to sit. I'm going to do my best to get some pictures of him up this week. He so much happier now that he can walk around. His whole personality has changed. He's so much more than what ever asked for.
