I'm sorry to hear Loki is having trouble. What led to his amputation?
There are several possibilities- but it is best your vet has a look and can evaluate all the information.
My pug Maggie was a rear amp for almost 4 years and never had any mobility issues, and I don't want to guess. She did have some slipping problems which I fixed with Musher's Secert paw wax, but it sounds like Loki's problem is more involved.
Let us know what the vet has to say.

Gosh - hope your vet has some good answers. Sending pawsitive thoughts.
Let us know what happens!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Loki is such a great name! I'm sorry he's got something going on but hopefully it's nothing serious. I know that had to be scary for you though to see him like that.
Try not to worry, at least until you know exactly what's going on. This can be something as simple as a pinched nerve, which can often be worked out with massage or a few simple rehab sessions. Hard play can often take its toll with a tripawd, especially as he ages, so I'll bet this is something that can be reversed and avoided in the future.
Hang in there and keep us posted. Got any pics of Loki? He sound really spunky!

I'm SOOOO relieved to report that the issue was a split toenail that was bothering him. I don't know how I missed that =) The vet trimmed it and said he would probably lose the nail, but he is already starting to use his leg again.
This scare has opened my eyes to the importance of being vigilant about the health of his remaining good legs. Up until now I've taken it for granted. Bostons can live up to 20 years, and Loki is still a pup by those standards. I don't want to lose him because I neglected to give him the best care I could.
Thanks so much, I feel soo much better!
That said, I was going to try Musher's Secret paw wax to help with his slipping problem. Is there anything else I should be doing or looking out for to help protect his remaining legs?
Some background on Loki: I got him in 2006. A couple of years later I took him to a friend's house. Even though I walked the fence line and could find no holes or gaps he managed to slip out after I took my eyes off of him for less than a minute. The next think I heard was him panting outside the gate where I found him a bloody mess. I was crushed.
I rushed him to the vet where an xray showed his right hind femur was broken into 5 small pieces. They tried to repair the damage, but I knew when I first saw the xray that the chances were slim that his leg would heal.
Sure enough, the titanium rod in his leg broke. Twice. Amputation was the only option at that point as there was little bone left to repair.
I was so heartbroken, but his recovery was instantaneous and I was so grateful to still have my buddy with me.
I'd post some pics of him, but I have no idea how. Here is a video of him a year or so after his amputation.
Cheers!
Eric
A broken toenail? YAAAAY! Geez I wish I would've thought of that, we've had this happen before here with other members too! Maybe we should have a warning somewhere on the site:
If your dog suddenly starts limping . . . check the toenails!
Loki is really really cute! I'm sure he'll have a long, healthy hoppy life ahead, you are such a conscientious pawrent.
To answer your question about protecting his legs....the way you can do this is by:
- building core muscle strength
- monitoring his exercise
- and trading rough play for mind games
Here are some links that can help get you started.
Oh, and about adding photos to the forums....you can find out how to add pictures here.
Yay for Loki, this is great news!
