So, Scooby my Tripawd GSD is getting along ok. No problems with one leg down. That said, he's suddenly started licking his back left hip, opposite his front right amputated leg. This is the side he normally lays on. He licks it and the fur is falling out. The question is, is it because it's like a bed sore because he's laying on it, or is it a sign that he's injured it? It's hard to tell if a three legged dog has a limp.

He may be going to the vet soon, and will probably be in the dreaded cone. I moved and I don't trust my new vet with Tripawd issues quite yet.

I've also been putting ointment on it, and I'm keeping his crate (smooth floor) clean.

Thanks!

You could always try spraying a little Bitter Apple on it - you can buy it at any pet store.  It's great for keeping animals from licking.

Sounds like he's twisting pretty well!  lol

Oh Scooby how did you know we were talking about you today? You're the star of today's Tripawds Gear blog post! Thank you for that great idea:

So about that potential hot spot. Is he licking on the outside or inside? Is there any oozing or odor? Can you post a pic?

Here's a hot spot that our Wyatt Ray just got. He's never had one before so when it appeared I panicked and took him to the vet.

She said it was indeed a hot spot and because he had another one forming, she put him on 7 days of antibiotics. I also washed it each day with a vet RX shampoo called "MiconaHex & Chlorhexidine" and sprayed Vetericyn Hot Spot spray to help it dry out. In about 10 days it was gone, however his skin stayed dark where it formed. The vet says this is normal for dogs with pigmented skin.

As for keeping him away from it, yeah that's hard. Cone of shames are the best way unfortunately.
