Hind leg giving out

Hi our dog, Scout, had a hind amputation back in Dec due to osteosarcoma. We decided on a combo of therapies including holistic & metronomic instead of traditional chemo. He's been doing fantastic & bloodwork & x-rays have been coming back clear. His good hind leg has periodically had the shakes. The past few weeks we noticed him slowing a bit & needing a break @ times during his walks. We thought this might be due to the increasing heat so we've shortened his walks. Then a few days ago he started having trouble getting up. I made an appointment w/ his oncologist for early next week. Now today he can't get up or hold himself up & of course the oncologist is closed over the weekend. His regular vet told me to hoist him up & make him stand w/ support on the leg as well as massaging it. Any other suggestions??

Thanks

Please consider registering to take full advantage of these forums.

You might also want to consult with a certified rehab vet in addition to your oncologist. The symptoms you describe could be anything from fatigue to neurological problems. We hope it is nothing serious.

How long were the walks Scout was taking before he weakened and were you doing any other strengthening exercises or stretching and massage? Much shorter more frequent walks are recommended. And walks don't build strength, only stamina. Check out our Cal Animal Rehab video interviews for more information.

Hope this helps, please keep us posted.
