I am thinking about getting a harness for Valentina. The sheet works ok but I think maybe I need something more heavy duty. I need it mostly to help her back end when she squats to pee. I f I am not supporting her back end she sinks to the ground while trying to pee. It's kind of hard with the sheet and it is killing my back. She is a very long and large Dog so it needs to be strong and big enough for her. Any suggestions?

I have a (brand new) large Help Em Up you can have. It may be too small for Valentina. It looks pretty adjustable. PM me if you think she can fit. If you are going to buy a harness- I would go for a Ruffwear. I have tried them all…slings, Help em up, ruffwear Animal Suspension Suits…The ruffwear is the best as far as durability, ease of use, cost and support.

Large fits 65- 100 lbs

Measurements

Neck: 20-36"
Chest: 20-40"
Waist: 16-30"

Works well on:
Large, common breeds of dogs.

Breed types:
Lab and Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers.

Our most popular harness, based on size and weight of most common dog breeds.

Select harness sized based on your dog's weight first, then take measurements for accuracy. If your dog's weight is on the cusp of harness sizes, we recommend sizing down.

The Help 'Em Up Harness is machine-washable with mild detergent. Set to delicate cycle and air dry for best results.

Please contact Blue Dog Designs directly for information about the Help 'em Up harness or read our original review.

For giant breed dogs requiring additional support we often recommend the AST Get A Grip harness, however the Help 'em Up is the only one we've found with a hip lift handle.

Just a note- I was very pleased with both the wonderful customer service (after I ordered the wrong harness) and the product quality. Very well made. I think since the time Brett ordered his, they (Bluedogdesigns) have tweeked the design. The only problem... I assumed that because it came in two pieces, I could use just the back half. You have to use both front and back together.

Hi Julie,

Do you still have that Help'Em Up harness? If yes, I am interested in buying it. I have an 11.5 year old Akbash Dog that has Type 2 IVDD. This harness seems to be the perfect solution for helping him up/down stairs, into the car via a ramp and handy for when he gets too weak to finish his walk.

Thanks! Martine

Hi Martine, welcome to Tripawds.  Your future posts will not require moderation.

I had to look up IVDD- I'm sorry your pup has this serious back problem.

According to the rules for our Angel Exchange all items offered on this site are exchanged for free, shipping methods and associated costs are worked out between the exchanging parties.

I'll send Julie a PM and maybe a FB post to let her know you are interested- then you guys can work it out if it is still available.

Thanks Karen,

I didn't realize this. I guess PM means "personal message"?  I've never been part of a forum that uses this formatting so I have a learning curve!

Thankfully Benek has the type 2 version so no pain - "just" eventually loss of sensation in his feet (starting to knuckle over with back paws) and walks like a badly bred German Shepherd with his hocks way low if the walk ends up being too long or too hilly.  Sad because everything else with Benek is perfectly healthy... but the 'warrantee' on his back legs and back has expired!

This site is truly inspiring - the lucky dogs/animals that have dedicated loving owners.

Hi Martine (and thanks Karen!).

Thanks for joining us here I'm sorry about Benek. Here is another option that we really love, it's the Ruff Wear Doubleback Harness:

The Web Master is the most popular harness we recommend for most Tripawds. Please review this post which should help you decide which harness is best for you and your dog.

Which harness is right for my dog?
