I'll check out Whole Dog Journal.

Hank is eating his regular meals. He's drinking lots of water and peeing more than usual but that's the result of the pred. The lethargy is really strange. We'll see how he reacts in the next couple of days once the pred gets out of his system.

So glad to hear that he is eating and drinking just fine.  Hopefully you can get him in to see the specialist soon.  Like Sally said, if he seemed to be responding to the massages, keep it going! Because Henry’s limp is so minor, the specialist said to keep working on his strength with the exercise peanut, so I’ve been trying to do the combination of strength and balance training, stretching, and massaging at least every other day. She said before and after to do a warm compress, and that even a blanket fresh out of the dryer would help.  If it’s both of Hank’s back legs that are bugging him, I would try wrapping that back end in a warm blanket before and after massaging him.  Sounds like what I’ve been doing with Henry may be a bit too much for Hank at this time, but until you can see the specialist, I’d keep trying the massages and warm blanket or heating pad, etc.  Keep us posted, and let us know what the specialist says!

Good luck Hank, you’ll be feeling better in no time!!

Welcome! Is Bronzino your pup's name?

For cases like this, we highly recommend seeing a certified canine rehab vet/tech (CCRT or CCRP ) for a professional orthopedic evaluation. That's why we created the Maggie Moo Fund for Tripawd Rehab.

Best wishes, please keep us posted. Your future forum posts will not require moderation.

Thanks! Bronzino is my username - a favorite 16th century Italian artist. Thanks for letting me know about the Foundation! That is an incredibly kind thing to do for others.

I went back to the vet's this afternoon and had him run blood tests - everything came back normal. He gave me the referral so I will be calling them tomorrow to talk about an evaluation. I'm hoping once the pred gets out of his system he will be back to normal. He's also been moaning and grunting a lot more than he usually does. I'm just absolutely stumped (as is the vet) since he shows absolutely no pain or reaction to anything. Ugh. We will see. I've also been giving both dogs Zuke's Hip Action supplement. I don't know it's helping but they sure find it delicious.

An Update on Mr. Hank!

We visited the specialist yesterday. He agreed with my regular vet that his x-ray on his right leg looked perfect. The docs stretched his back right leg back (as if you were to lift your leg so that it is parallel to the ground while your torso is bent forward to form a plane). He FINALLY reacted to that. Vet thinks that he probably pulled the muscle that runs through the hip (they told me the proper name, but I can't remember). We received another rimidal (sp?) prescription for one week and kennel restriction for 2-3 weeks. This is only day two and it has been TOUGH. Especially today because it snowed and when I took him out after work he wanted to play, play, play in the snow. I couldn't let him do it and it was awful. We are to go back in three weeks for a re-check and make sure he's on the upswing. Fingers crossed!

Awww crazy puppy. I'm glad the vets feel it's not a serious injury though. Was the muscle referred to as the "iliopsoas"? Here's a good article about this type of injury:
