So I am trying to be as proactive as possible with Champ and set his body up for success. I figure since he's going to have an abnormal gait for the rest of his life (he's less than 2) I wanted to start up some preventative chiropractic work for him.
So today we went to Vitality Chiropractic and he had his first adjustment with Dr. O'Connor. He was very excited to get there and definitely liked the Dr. She made a few adjustments of his pelvis, lower back, and neck which she all said were pretty common for tri-pawds. She also did some stretches of his tail/pelvis which he just melted for. She recommended seeing him back in a month and then to start stretching out his rechecks to every 3 months depending on how he does.
I didn't notice any issues from before the adjustment so I'm not really expecting to see anything different out of him but only time will tell!
Here he is afterwards showing of his sharp new coat!
Hey Champ!
I believe the vet research on the recent Talk Radio said that rear leg amputees develop a slight twist in the rear. I imagine this isn't very good for the spine so I think it's great that you are doing some preventive care.
My front leg amputee kitty had her chiropractic appointment one month after the amputation. She totally melted and fell asleep during the treatment. I noticed that she was lighter on her feet after the treatment, less thumpy. I also would see her stop and make adjustments to her remaining front scapula by lifting it up and back, then she'd continue on walking. I think she discovered a better positioning that felt more comfortable.
The chiro vet also gave me some strengthening exercises to do with Mona and I see she has become stronger by sitting up on her hind legs. I guess we never know what our pet will do to naturally adapt.
Champ looks fabulous is the red coat (Mona is black and red is her favourite colour).
Kerren and Trikitty Mona
Aww he looks fantastic! What a lucky pup to have a pawrent thinking proactively. Yep, Kerren is right, rear-leg Tripawds do develop a curve in their spines over time, we see that in Wyatt Ray now that he's been a Tripawd for 5 years. Champ is really going to benefit from the adjustments. Where is the clinic? If you'd like to put a referral in our Veterinary Specialist Referrals topic that would be fantastic.
