I guess Buster is feeling better. He's been lounging all night long out back. I went out to check on him & he wasn't in his lounger instead there is/was a dead possum on the deck... I don't see any bites marks on my boy. However he hasn't had any shots due to his condition. Do possums carry rabies?? Help... we have a big day planned out tomorrow.

Kim,
Possums can carry rabies but it is much more commonly seen in skunks, raccoons, foxes, and bats. Rabies vaccines are required every 3 years in most states but the immunity is often good for 7 years or more, so if he had at least 2 rabies vaccines in his life he should be okay. The possum can be tested for rabies but you need to cut off the head and send it to your local public health dept. I would contact your vet to see when his last rabies vaccine was given, and to see if rabies is a big problem where you live. It is a bigger problem down south and on the east coast but rare on the west coast.
He should be fine, but check for puncture wounds which might need antibiotics!

Thank you soo very much for the speedy responses... Frankly, I didn't think he had it in him. When he was younger he was very adventurous.... I want to check him out thoroughly. Poor possum, I think he broke his neck.

Wow, Buster's pretty incredible! What spunk! It must have been like Wild Animal Kingdom out there. So glad he looks OK and all that.
Pam, thanks for your advice!
Let us know what happens Kim.

Wow, Buster the Possum killer!! Abbey used to cock her head and listen and then dig frantically for moles. She dug up and killed 5 moles that we know of, but she never tackled a possum~ I hope it was quick for the old guy. I'm glad Buster is ok and I hope he has fun dreams about his adventure!
