Riot is an almost 12 1/2 year old GSD/Malamute mix. He had his left rear leg amputated due to osteosarcoma on 5/31/19. As of yesterday, his lungs are clear! He's on chemo, but his WBC was too low this week. We're going to try again next week after a course of antibiotics. Now we're having trouble getting my very picky eater to gain some weight, so he can put on muscle. I bought the PetAg high calorie formula from Dyne, which should come in a few days. I know it's rare for a tripawd to need weight GAIN, but here we are. Has anyone else been here, and can offer general weight and muscle building supplemental diets? We won't be changing his kibble. His energy level isn't high, but he's still burning more than he takes in.

Thank you. I've been reading it. He won't eat anything fish related, most dairy products, hamburger gives him the runs, won't go near tripe, hates eggs, unless there's way too much better added. I'm looking for higher calorie, low fat options. He does very poorly with much added fat.
Hmmm, what about bison or buffalo meat?

He already got the hot dog and vienna sausages that were a fail with Riot this morning. As well as the liverwurst fail from last night. Riot did eat a few small bites of some stew, with a few small chicken treats this morning. So at least he got a bit in him. No where near enough. I'm going to grind up his kibble tonight, and see if I can add anything he likes.
Hah! You might end up having to put him on a diet!
I hope you find that magic recipe he loves. Our Jerry was also super picky at times, I feel for you!

That's the problem, he's already on one. He's half Rottie, and was getting legit fat. He was doing well on a diet, but now it's totally blown. He's back to full blown begging.
Try Fresh Pet. It's in the refrigerator section for dogs at Whole Foods and Target. And, make sure you aren't harboring a "frustrated energy" when you feed him. Just get all excited, (lots of "good boy") about it, put it down on a plate (not his normal food bowl) and walk away. Or maybe have another person "present" the food. I'm sure you're already doing this, but lots of small portions multiple times a day. Cake, ice cream, cheese pizza, I'm sure you are trying it all!!

I'll try some Fresh Pet. I can't get excited around him and food. We spent the better part of a decade working around some pretty extensive possession issues. You'd never know now, but it took a huge amount of work to get him where he is today. I always just give him his food, his release word, and walk away. He doesn't like sweet things, never has. Occasionally some ice cream, but when he hasn't eaten much, dairy is a no go for him. I can't risk diarrhea right now.

I had good luck with this recipe for skinny foster dogs and also one of my agility dogs. You can tweak the recipe as needed, ie ground turkey or chicken instead of beef. Although it’s meant to be served raw I would probably cook the meat for a dog with a compromised immune system.
Thank you very much. He would never take so many ingredients together. I wish he wasn't so picky. We're very concerned with his weight loss.
Oncology department called in an appetite stimulant. I can pick it up in a few hours. I sure hope it works. He's losing the muscle we worked so hard to gain.
