What are some longer lasting treats I can give Denali that are heathier options for her? I've always just filled kongs with peanut butter and that gives her (and Loki) hours of enjoyment. Just wondering what some other option are that will also be longer lasting.

Good question! I don't know - outside of rawhides, but I don't know if those are healthy. (we don't them around here since we have possession issues)

She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Ahhh, yes, the everlasting treat dilemma....
Kongs are so versatile; you can try freezing beef or chicken broth inside. That makes for hours of fun.
You can try the Everlasting Treat Ball, which we think is a fabulously interactive toy.
Or, what about salmon popsicles?
As for rawhides...we're not crazy about them. Most are treated with nassssssssty chemicals. Unless you buy 100 pawcent organic, which is available, but at the price you can get them for, we think you're better off trying a large raw bone, like a leg bone. They will clean teeth to a sparkling white shine, way better than a rawhide which we think are a bigger choking hazard than raw bones.

I have an "intensive" chewer who can devour anything in minutes (Greenies are gone in under 1 minute), as well as a more sedate "licker". I found raw soup bones are an inexpensive option and can be kept in the freezer. They contain the beneficial bone marrow but are messy and not allowed in the house. A less messy option, but more expensive, are beef or bison tendons. In particular the achilles tendon which is really tough. There is some discussion about the potential benefits of the natural joint supplements that are found in tendons. Rawhides are FORBIDDEN for my dogs due to the choking hazard, the chemicals, and the complication of the undigested rawhide "balling" up in their stomach...I have enough vet bills already. I make sure that none of the treats are smoked or have any preservatives.

Tai – 9 yr old lab. Diagnosed Osteosarcoma Dec 18/09. Front right leg amputated Dec 21/09. Started chemo Jan 7/10. Lung mets discovered Sept 16/10. Valiant to the end on Oct 26/10 when cancer reappeared in a leg and we made the decision to set her free. Forever in my heart where not even cancer can take her from me.
Thanks guys - I should have specified, they normally only need the long lasting treat when I can not supervise at 100% . For example, if I need to mow the yard, they get a long lasting treat or when I go off to work, they also get a long lasting treat. So it has to be something they can have with little supervision. The treatball might be a good option for this. I'm not sure how the soup bones would be? I've heard mixed reviews on the cow hooves and how they can splinter. Denali is a strong chewer - Loki is not. I guess Denali is pretty content with nylabones and knuckle bones - Loki's not a fan of either, so I wanted something that would work for both. How do you freeze a kong with chicken/beef broth inside - I'm assuming I need to somehow "plug" one end of the kong?
Rawhides are forbidden in my household! Loki is semi-food aggressive and he feels rawhides are a 'food' item. He's ok with Denali stealing kongs though - which is why that's my first choice. Plus I don't like how rawhide expands when wet.

I'm glad you guys said this about rawhides. I didn't know they had chemicals on them. They have never been welcome at my house except on a rare occasion in the past. I'm afraid of the choking hazard and the mess on a carpet. Plus, they seem to bring out the wild beast in dogs.
Last year with Comet and Rugby, I did try the Dent-a-bone to help clean their teeth but I don't know if those are any good either.
I've done the peanut butter in a kibble ball and Kong for Rocket when I first got him and he was crated. I sure hated the mess though and washing it out was gross!
Fortis dad - do you crack the coconut first? Of course, he's such a big guy I guess he could do it. I'm guilty of giving a pineapple core to mine once! I thought they would just gnaw on it for flavor but Rugby ate it and threw then up. I didn't do that again.
