Hi.  If you are following Griffin's Journey, you know that Griffin is a 10-year old goldendoodle who had his right forelimb amputated due to osteosarcoma.  He is currently receiving chemotherapy treatments (6 total rounds of Carboplatin planned) after which he will join the Yale Canine Cancer Vaccine trial.  Post surgery he weighs 60 lbs and has been rated as ideal body condition.

I spoke with Dr. Anna Maria Wolf, certified holistic vet, today.  I'm listing her recommendations below, including specific brands that she highlighted, but please be sure to check with your own vet before adding any supplements to your pet's diet.  Also, Griffin's oncologist, Dr. Maria Camps, told me that while Griffin is undergoing chemo, he should not take any anti-oxidants as they would work against the chemo.

General Canine Vitamin - Thorne Research Veterinary Canine Basic Nutrients (especially if feeding home cooked meals which may not contain all necessary daily nutrients) [follow dosage as listed]

Fish Oil - Nordic Naturals (this same brand was also highly recommended by a rehab vet that saw Griffin for a consultation) [follow dosage as listed]

Mushrooms - Host Defense Stamets 7 (comes in powder and capsule form; powder seems more cost effective) [follow dosage as listed]

Turkey Tail (another mushroom) - Host Defense (I am going to purchase a generic brand) [500 mg twice a day]

Colostrum - Imutek (I am going to purchase a generic brand) [500 mg twice a day]

Stasis Breaker (Chinese herb) - Jing Tang (vet approval/prescription required) [follow dosage as listed]*

Wei Qi Booster (Chinese herb) - Jing Tang (vet approval/prescription required) [follow dosage as listed]*

Cannabinoid Oil - ElleVet, Petreleaf, and Canna-Pet were the brands she recommended [follow dosage as listed] - I am holding off on using CBD oil for now as Griffin is not experiencing any mobility issues and I want to gauge his response to all of the other supplements I'll be adding to ensure he tolerates them well.

*I found Jing Tang on Well-Pet Dispensary in both capsule (powder) and teapill (coated raw herbs the size of a BB) form.  I followed the directions on the website to email for a free consultation with Dr. Robert Silver so that I could place an order for those herbs.  There is a significant price difference between the 2 forms, with a bottle of 200 teapills (will last 20 days for Griffin) costing $17 versus $54.50 for a bottle of 100 capsules (would last 25 days for Griffin).  More teapills are needed for dosing than capsules, but they are still far more cost effective.

Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com

just to add the K9 immunity has the mushroom powder that fights to keep the immune system strong. Its recommended with or without chemo. You should find It in the nutrition blog.  If I remember correctly it does contain the turkey tail mushroom and Brownie loved it.

Sometimes I would buy the turkey tail mushroom fresh and add it to his diet.

My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019.  With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer.  I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud!  He will live forever in my Heart!

Hi Nancy!  My head was swimming with so many different supplements and brand names earlier, so I made a chart for myself to compare the cost of some of the supplements that were recommended.

I looked at the ingredients for K9 Immunity versus Stamets 7.  Each of them is a blend of mushrooms, with 4 of the same included in both (Royal Sun, Cordyceps, Reishi, and Maitake).  K9 Immunity also has Turkey Tail and Shitake.  Stamets 7 also has Lion's Mane, Chaga, and Mesima.  Since I'm giving Turkey Tail as a separate supplement, for comparison purposes, Stamets 7 had 3 additional mushrooms in their blend versus 1 additional for K9 Immunity .

I then compared the cost of capsules and powder versions of each brand. For Griffin's size, K9 Immunity capsules would cost $54/month versus $22.50/month for Stamets 7.  The K9 Immunity powder version would cost $60/month versus $10.50/month for <a href="
