When we adopted Totem I turned to Google God and asked "best puppy food?" I saw a post that listed the 5 best commercial foods for puppies. I chose Purina Pro Plan for puppies and that is what Totem has been eating since he was 7 weeks old. He gets a few treats during the day, mainly to entice him into his crate or to reward good behavior...tidbits.
He is very slim and we want to keep him that way. He takes no supplements. Cancer is not an issue...at least not yet. My concern is more his developing diabetes later in life so we limit carbs. If we have leftover meats that we are not going to eat I will sprinkle some tidbits on his kibble. We also dab peanut butter at times when we feed him in a Kong, which he loves.

I don't have a dog but follow a site that has Great Danes bred and raised to be service dogs. They use Purina Pro Plan also. They start with mama's milk, start supplementing with goat's milk/ Purina kibble gruel, use the puppy canned food to feed off spoons so the pup's learn their names and appropriate kibble eventually. The adults are given Purina Pro Plan with some shredded meat (I think ends from a school). Purina donates the food but they were using the Purina Pro Plan before the donations began.
I visited a friend in Europe who had a 8-month old Great Dane and fed her dog a European kibble and boiled chicken.
You will receive lots of opinions here about what food is best. I tried so many different foods with my cats including raw, home-made, no-carb, supplements, etc and eventually settled with what they both would eat and now food to manage one's weight and another food to support the other cat's kidneys and they don't get human food except for a bit of fish every now and then.
Go with what you can afford and manage with your lifestyle and I'm sure you'll both be happy.

Hoooo boy that is one hot button topic in the pet world that gets people going! It's basically the equivalent of asking "what is the best religion?" to another human. Seriously! But again, we in this community will never condemn anyone for their choices. Whatever you decide is best for Totem will be respected. You'll find a wide variety of feeding philosophies and choices in our community.
In the 11 years of being mom to Wyatt Ray , I've learned that there is no one best puppy kibble. There are so many different kibbles, brands, feeding philosophies, and of course, budget plays into it too. We have tried a million different brands with him over the years, raw, home cooking, a mix of both, and finally settled on Wild Earth. You'll find lots of ideas in the Tripawds Nutrition blog , specifically our diet articles.
One of the most respected resources out there to help you decide on a brand is Dog Food Advisor. We use it all the time and admire the work that its founder does to present factual, unbiased dog food information.
Also, if you want a good magazine to read with awesome information, we really love The Whole Dog Journal.

Wow. I had no idea I had wandered into big controversy! I've seen ads for Wild Earth. I have to say that when we adopted Totem the woman who owned his mom and dad assured us we could get puppy food at Dollar General. And, no offense to anyone who feeds their dogs food from Dollar General. Tread lightly.

Oh gosh no need to back out, really. It's good to talk about these things, from nutrition to neutering to everything inbetween, so that we can all learn from each other. With so much information about pet nutrition that comes our way, it's nice to have a sounding board. We are all about sharing information here and again, no worries about being judged. Everyone here is committed to that, promise.
