I checked Sam but the inside of her mouth is mostly black and some pink (no black spots on her tongue like Tate had), so it's kind of hard to tell. I suppose I'll get used to what it looks like and hopefully would notice something different.
Thank you Charon.

TATE ~ Forever in our hearts.
Thanks for sharing this, Charon. What a wonderful way to honor Gayle. I just checked out both Nova and Emmy's mouths. Nothing on Nova's tongue at all, and the roof of her mouth is all black anyway, but looked good. But I was a little stunned to find a bunch of dark spots on the roof of Emmy's mouth and a jet black lesion on her front gum, which has got me a little worried. I've been googling for some pictures of oral melanoma in dogs, but not finding anything that looks like what I am seeing. It's not ulcerated, nor is it firm. It's flat and smooth. Hoping that is a good sign. It is very, very dark though. Can you recommend a good place to find some pictures of what the lesions look like? She was just at the vet a few weeks ago and no one noticed it, but I am not positive he even looked in her mouth. Gayle has given me reason to be extra vigilant.
I work in (human) Cancer Registry, and it just so happens that I am abstracting all melanoma cases this month. It is such a horrible, insidious disease in humans and pets. Most of the cases I am dealing with are scalp and back, so I am not sure what oral melanoma looks like.

Charon, I am so sorry to hear about Gayle. I have not been online here for a while, and was saddened to see your post when I logged in. You and Gayle are so supportive of everyone here. Thank you for the warning about the melanoma. I just checked Percy and will start checking him regularly from now on.

I wanted to tell you that I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Gayle. It is such good advice to check your dogs all over for lumps; including the mouth and toes and under the tail. Some of the worst cancers can actually be cured if caught early. It is a good idea to keep a tumor journal or map so you can keep track of even benign lumps like lipomas since as our dogs get older it is easy to forget which lumps have already been checked. I usually check my dogs every 2-3 months.

Charon I am so saddened to read this thread. Please know that ET Gayle is always in our hearts, as are you. I am heading right now to check Holly's and Zuzu's mouths.
Hugs,
Holly, Zuzu and Susan
Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!
