Since so many of our friends have left us recently, and we, too, have a giant hole in our hearts, I wanted to share a poem with you. I found this one very comforting last spring, when our family was grieving the loss of our beloved grandmother. It speaks to me again now…
“You can shed tears that she is gone,
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her only that she is gone,
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what she'd want:

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Gotta admit...that poem choked me up!
I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'll be terribly upset if and when I'm gone (and if anyone cares that I'm gone
) - if anyone cries for more than 1 day! 1 day! That's all you get! My funeral better be filled with laughter and good times! It better be a celebration of life, not the mourning of a loss! I'll haunt anyone that doesn't remember me with a smile and preferably a chuckle!
You've been warned!

She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included). She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

Chuck & Rusty
Rusty is a Labradoodle who was diagnosed with level 3 Fibrosarcoma on January 16th, 2010 and had his left hind leg amputated on January 25th, 2010 five days before his 18 month birthday. Please see Rusty's blog @rusty.tripawds.com. He is putting up one heck of a fight against this terrible disease.
What a beautifully put reminder of the power of the choices we make. We do our best to say things to comfort one another, but it's so hard to hear words when you're hurting, like when folks say phrases like 'just remember the good times', but when it is said so gently and kindly the heart begins to hear and heal.
