Thanks everyone, Novak is sure a good looking boy 🙂 Tomorrow morning, blood test and shaving for the area that Im gonna put the fentanyl patch that I will place tomorrow night at home. OMG and then.....surgery day. Im sitting, cuddling with him, and looking at his leg and Im like, wow, only one day with 4 paws!!!!! Im touching his left foot and detailing it...I know, Im crazy LOL Im still excited, but Im beginning to feel more nervous a bit, planning everything with my team at work...Im lucky to have them, because im sure Im a bit of a pain for them, controlling, asking this and that LOL But I would do the same for them, they are great friends/collegues.
What kind of drip(pain management ) did your dogs get during surgery? Im looking at the protocols and they are so many and so different. Just curious to see what is being done elsewhere.
Ohhh what a huge day for you. You're not crazy at all, I don't blame you for obsessing over his leg that's going away. If I had as much time to think about Jerry losing his leg I would go crazy. Thankfully we only had about a week between diagnosis and amputation.
As for pain management ...honestly I didn't think to ask, it was waaaay back for us before I knew anything. But if you're curious what vets have told us since, here's what world renowned pain-management specialist Dr. Petty says:
Ask what they are going to do for pain control during surgery.
- Local and regional nerve blocks with a drug called bupivacaine completely stop pain signals from reaching the brain and spinal cord when working on the front limbs.
- If it is a hind limb amputation, they should also use an epidural and local block.
- In either front or rear limb amputation, something called a “Constant Rate Infusion” or “CRI” should be administered as well. A CRI typically contains one to four different pain medications and is dripped in through an intravenous catheter before, during, and immediately after a surgery.

arghhhh Novak's breeder did a wonderful post about Novak and wanting to have positive energy for him tomorrow, all comments were wonderful, really heartfell, except one....the why amputate, why don't you wait and stop playing frisbee....like Im a bad mom to have let him still be active after the accident 3 years ago....that suck. I did what the specialist told me to do in the best I could and he beated the pronostic by 2 years with that leg. When he didnt feel good with that leg, I never push him to play, he had plenty of rest and low impact activity, it was just THIS spring that he got worse. Anyway, block that person...dont need that tonight!
Novak is getting sleepy with that fentanyl! Good drug lolol
Awww sweet boy. He says "Mom, that one person is a dummy, ignore them!"
Yes, there will always be one or two negative nellies. I feel sorry for them that they've never felt the kind of bond with an animal that everyone here has. Their loss. Who needs em?
We are thinking of you and sending all our love. Keep us posted.

Good luck with the operation
M y boy is long haired, took a good few months for it to grow back and not be so noticeable where they shaved him
you can be sure you are doing the right thing for him, just wait for a couple of days time when he wants to be running around madly again
Just to let everybody know, Novak is home and resting. The surgery went well, but the surgeon said that he had blood vessel of an athlete LOL not funny for her, but, one had 1 cm diameter!!! And I can't believe how much muscle he had still on that leg, because if was so thin compare to the other one, so good to know, that even with a loss of muscle mass, they were a lot and now, he has a big muscle cushion! Im soooooo drained, tired, my body hurts everywhere, I didn't eat much all day, was nauseous, I was hot, I was a mess LOL No, I was ok during the surgery, because no problem at all, anestesia stable, no blood loss problem, nothing, BUT...... it was after the surgery that got to me. He was not waking up fast, very much asleep, very drug, he wanted to sleep.... temperature was very slow to get up, started at 35C and got to 37.7C by the time I took him home. And he had some weird spasme, or vomiting effort, it was horrible to see. He vomited once, but with no effort, like it just went out. So we gave him a dose of anti nausea and another shot of pain killer and then, he was drolling thick saliva and was buzzed big time, but finally rested and he stop having those spasmes. Later in the evening, it came back and he vomited 3 times... but decided not to give anything else, maybe it was the hydromorphone that was making him vomit. So now hes ok since then and resting, sleeping on his bed. I put a matress beside him, so I can sleep close, or try to sleep...dont think I will be able. And, at home, I made him walk a bit with help and he did walk and hop!!! At the clinic we did try but he was not walking at all, at one time, I thought his other back leg was paralyzed!!!! LOL it was just that he was sleeping on that one and was numb. Crazy me LOL anyway... I will post more tomorrow and pictures, but now, im toasted!
OMD!! Novak is HOME....same day as surgery....that's rough...moreso on you than Novak!! Comi g out of the anesthesia, being on heavy pain meds, including the patch...all could contribute to the upset tummy.
I know you are exhausted, emotionally and physically! You probably won't get much sleep the next several nights. TRY and take care of yourself, okay?
And yeah, as far as that one post from the uninformed, insensitive, no clue DUMMY (ditto Jerry), can't help but feel sorry for someone so completely oblivious to the bond you and Novak have! You knownyiur Novak better than anyone and you have taken eexquisite care of your sweet boy!
Glad he's sleeping now. Rest, rest and more rest for now. Many dogs spend the first night in the hospital and don't even attempt to stand til the next day.
Okay...big sigh of relief.....NOVAK IS HOME AND ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY!! 🙂
Hugs to all!

Glad to hear all went well
Most of us wouldn't see the first few hours after such an operation but you have the knowledge to deal with it, even though it is such a worry
Glad to hear he is up and hopping, he will only get better from now on
Novak is doing amazing!!! That dog is really something, wow! So the night was hard...on me...not on him, maybe a bit. He was sleeping fine and then around 2h30am, starting to have the damn spasms he was unconfortable, nauseous, wanted to get on his tummy or up, he vomited again and then I decided to take him outside to see if walking outside and potty would be better, the vet told that he had a lot of gas, so walking a bit could help him a bit. He was burping isoflurane(anesthesia gas). So at 3 am, I went outside alone with him and I carry him down the stairs and then I let him hop for the very first time!!! 14h after the end of his surgery, he was able to hop, by himself, I was holding to the harness but he was carrying his weight. And he did pee!!!!! Yay a big pee! And we went back to bed and since then, no more nausea or vomitting. He's hungry like hell, but I Feed him several small meal during the day, think its better for his stomach. Except for the spasms episodes where he did cry a bit, very small bit, he's sleeping, doesn't seem in pain at all.
He did come on the mattress with me last night, he wanted to cuddle And this morning, he got up by himself from the down position to standing position!!! Im like WTH??? I have to watch him, he wants to run and go crazy sometime...when I move, he wants to follow me, so I stay on the bed with him, with the laptop.
I went outside around 1pm and he was able to take to stairs down(5 steps) very easy with me helping him with the harness, but should I still carry him up and down the stairs? Or let him go with me holding the harness? No pee and poop this time 🙁 but thats ok.
Now, he is sleeping. The wound seem to be ok, brusing is appering, but seem ok...the thing Im more worried a bit, it the blue/purple area, I know that I saw picture with those, but it feel colder a bit in that area, it very small, but I dont want him to have a lack of blood supply!!! Anyway, for now, im keeping relax and watching the wound to make sure it ok.
First real big hop this morning, 24h post op
