Our Golden Retriever puppy came to us one week post-op for a broken femur just after Thanksgiving. She and her siblings had been the cause of tripping up the man of the household and she had been accidentally stepped on. Just one of those unfortunate accidents. She was 10 weeks old at the time. She seemed to be doing well and we were told that she would bounce back from her broken leg as if nothing had ever happened. Unfortunately, she developed fracture disease with resulting quadriceps stifle. She wouldn't put any weight on her leg, her knee and ankle became very stiff in extension, and upon re Xray we could see that the bone was not healing well...over callousing in some areas with non-union in others. The vet recommended trying two weeks of therapy to try to gain range of motion and encourage her to use her leg. We tried diligently and she made some gains in range of motion but still no weightbearing or functional use after two weeks. The vet then recommended either amputation or a surgical release of her musculature. We decided that she would be a happier puppy with the amputation rather than a significant surgery followed by extensive therapy with very limited success rates. It was a hard decision, but she is the happiest, sweetest, most gentle puppy and now is two weeks post amputation. Suture removal was today and now she gets to get back to the business of being a puppy!
Stelllllaaaaa! You are such a lucky puppy to have great humans like yours! I'm sorry you lost a leg but you're living a great life now, lucky dawg!
That's great she is doing so well! Do you have any photos? Here's a post about adding images to the forums. We'd love to see some!
Has your vet talked to you about rehab therapy for her? Typically with young Tripawd puppies, they could use extra help with motor skills. Rehab therapy is great for all Tripawds, but especially puppies. The best part is the Tripawds Foundation will even pay for your first visit, see:

Thanks so much for sharing Stella's recovery and life with us. We're looking forward to following along with her three-legged adventures!

What great news! Sorry about the accident, but great that she is doing so well. Now that the stitches are out, you should start to see her really perk up each day!
