Rudi had his surgery yesterday (rear leg amputation). He came home last night, but a lot of bleeding meant a trip to emergency vets and an overnight stay. He's back home now wearing a compression bandage and although a little groggy, he's wolfed his tea down and with some help been into the garden for a wee. I can still feel a lot of fluid build up, but he's back for a check-up in morning so should be OK.
We decided to amputate because when we adopted Rudi from Romania (I'm in UK) he had an old rta and his leg was pinned. This became infected and he's had a re-pin and numerous operations but we never resolved what was causing his sporadic but increasing pain. He already seems in much less pain, I'm sure we've made the best decision for him. Thanks so much for this website, I'd be feeling very lost and unsure without it.
Best

Welcome April and Rudy! So amazing of you to take him in and give him all the love he deserves! These first couple weeks are the hardest but remember that he will bounce back and be such a happy boy!
Love of love and treats for him
Cody and Family
Cody is our 7 year old Australian Heeler mix boy. Diagnosed on 2/20/14 and became a tripawd 2/21/14! We chose a homeopathic approach and he is being treated by Dr. Loops our of NC.
Oh Bravo! We're so glad he sailed through the surgery!
I'm sorry you had to go back to the vet but at least it's done with and now he can start healing. Fluid build up and seromas aren't uncommon at all, they happen a lot and are scary but usually harmless. Keep an eye on the area to make sure it doesn't smell or look icky, just in case.
Good luck at the vet's tomorrow. We're so glad you found us too! Hugs to you & Rudi!

Thanks all, day five and it's been a tough few days but he had a whole hours sleep last night, which is his longest sleep without being sedated since the surgery. He's not having any problems getting around though, and if tramadol is supposed to suppress appetite, no-one told our Rudi

Rudi is a Rock Star!
Glad to hear things are getting back to normal.
