First of all, we are overwhelmed by everyone's concern, prayers and well wishes. Thank you to everyone.
We met with the dogtor for about an hour this morning. We went over diet, what medicines she is taking, where she gets groomed, and how she is doing when not having the seizures.
He started at her nose and inspected, peered at, manipulated, palpitated every square inch of her. He said it wasn't an ear problem, her heartbeat was regular and strong, a bit fast, but Penny hates to go to the vet, so we both agreed that pulse being a bit fast was due to being at the vet.
Her weight was right where it should be, her gums were the perfect color, so the dogtor says he believes her seizures are neurological. We talked about phenobarbital is the drug of choice but there are side effects, liver damage. We decided to do a senior dog blood panel and check her thyroid while they had her blood.
He said depending on what the blood panel shows, he would decide if he would prescribe the phenobarbital or because he feels the seizures are on the very low side of severity he could possibly wait to see if the seizures come more often or become more severe. I told him we would do what he recommends and my concerns are we don't want her to hurt herself while having a seizure.
He believes she is having very, very minor epileptic seizures.
We have a tremendous amount of faith in our vet,Dr Jack Long in Forestville, Ca. just about a mile from Mom's Apple pies.
The blood work will be back Monday and we'll update everyone.
Thanks again for the well wishes and concern. the chauffeur
Well, at least the vet thinks they are minor. Hope he's right and hope that the blood work comes back looking good!
Will look forward to hearing good news on Monday!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Hi Jack,
You know Tani has epilepsy caused by hydrocephalus. She has been on phenobarb for 9 plus years now without liver problems, we do blood work every 6 months. She is on a low dose too, but it really controls her seizures.
It would also be great if you could manage without meds, but at least in our experience long term use of phenobarb has not been a issue.
And it is good that she seems otherwise healthy.

Howdy, we got the results of Penny's, the world's most beautiful Border Collie, blood work this afternoon.
The results are, no significant abnormalities in her blood, thyroid or urine.
He doesn't feel any medication is needed. He believes they are not seizures but neurologic episodes.
We'll keep a diary of when and what we witness when she has an episode. If they become a regular event, like one every month or if they become more severe, we'll contact the vet.
All in all good news, I just wish there was a magic pill to make it all go away.
Thanks again for all the good thoughts and wishes.

Hooray for good news for Penny! I hope your use of that dairy is few and far between - or better yet that it will sit on the shelf and gather dust!
