Can our luck please get better?
this time last year we were dealing with osteosarcoma (still going strong by the way) now Jack's sister has disarticulated one of her toes and she is booked to have it removed in a couple of weeks as it is unlikely to repair and it keeps slipping out of position, not good in a fit p, active agility dog. Anyone any experience of dealing with the recovery etc from this?
Oh my gosh I'm so sorry! Poor sissy!
You know things will get better, Jack is the shining example of what's pawsible! I'm so glad he's doing well, that's awesome!
I actually know off a 13 year old border collie ranch dog who had one of his toes amputated several years ago, and it never bothered him one bit. He's still going strong, just like your girl will.
Hang in there, and prepare to be inspired 🙂
Keep us posted OK?

Yikes! Don't have any insight. I like that Jerry has a reference for you about a senior dog who is doing very well with a similar situation. Maybe the toe will do some self healing in the next couple of weeks.
I'm really glad to hear that sweet Jack is going strong!
Keep js posted!
Hugs to all!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Years ago our lab/husky mix Lady had two toes amputated due to cancer. She got around fine thereafter. I don't remember the recovery as being particularly traumatic (but I was probably 16, so might have been oblivious).
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
Pofi had been a toe amputee about 10 months before becoming a Tripawd (same leg where toe was removed). Most dogs do pretty well.
Is it an "outside" toe or a middle toe? And what breed? They do seem to adjust faster to an outer toe amputation. Pofi's feet are like a greyhound's - very long. The removed toe was 6 CM and a middle toe - and it does make the foot less stable to lose what is a very weight bearing toe. But the outer toes are not so weight bearing. The breed and shape of paw would also make a difference, I'd wager.

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly. His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.
Here is a picture of Jack with sister Finn waiting to go on their morning walk
The toe that is the problem is basically her index finger on her front right paw, I am told that as an inside toe it is not such a problem as if it was an outside one
I was wondering about getting her a boot to protect the toe before it goes and for afterwards, she's a medium sized breed weighs in at just under 16kgs
Gooooood looking duo!! And waiting very politely for their walks and with laser focus!!
From a common sense standpoint, it seems like a booty would be helpful. The vet should be able to advise.
Smooches to both the pups!

Yes! I do have experience with a toe amputation.....when my now Tripawd, Nitro, was a couple years old he had a toe removed from his left hind foot. He had a weird toenail that kept growing into his pad. When I expressed concern about him having 3 toes, the vet said "these dogs do great on 3 LEGS! 3 toes won't even phase him". Little did I know this same dog would lose a leg in later years. We got an empty IV bag from the vet, and laced a string through the top (several holes punched in the top of the bag) and put this on his foot to keep it clean when he had to go outside. I don't remember much else from this time, I think it took a couple weeks before he was back to normal. At the time I'm sure I thought it was the end of the world, but it was nothing compared to the recovery of losing a leg.
Paula and Nitro
Nitro 11 1/2 yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms. Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"
"Be good, mama loves you".....run free my beautiful Warrior
Oh I totally forgot about that Paula! Thanks for chiming in.
