What can we do for the puppy? The mom, half wiener half chihuahua, only a year old, never had puppies. With her first born, she was eating the placenta, and had a hard time with the umbilical cord. The pup was hanging from its cord while she struggled to sever it. I went to grab some scissors and quickly sanitized them with rubbing alcohol, and I severed the cord. Then I took some cotton thread and tied it.
That's when I noticed its back paw was missing the skin and pads. Poor baby, poor momma. From this point, I helped with the delivery. Her 3rd pup was still born and nothing I did to breath life into it. The 5th almost went that way, but a little CPR and mom licking after 10 min, it moved a leg and now is healthy.
It has been two days, and the injured foot seems to be recoiling, and the claws have fallen out, and the muscles are getting dried out, smaller. It's like it is becoming a stump. My geriatric father says to leave it alone, that the skin will grow back. But surely not the pads!
Is there anything I can do for this newborn? Should we apply some type of ointment and bandage system? They are very tiny. I know that she will grow up and be active and happy, but what quality of life will she have? Also, we plan on giving the pups away once ready... do we tell the family members of the injury before handing over a special-needs dog to them? My mom says first-come-first-served. I don't know.
Please, any advice would be very much welcomed.
Hi David,
Thanks for joining, we are glad you found us.
We've had other members join us for similar reasons. Either they adopted a dog with a "chicken wing" as these limbs sometimes morph into, or they are in almost an exact same situation as yours. It's not uncommon for the leg to heal up and remain a stump, but please don't risk infection: see a vet immediately. A vet can tell you the best thing to put on there and how to care for the area. We aren't vets, so we don't want to risk harming the puppy by giving incorrect information.
As for who adopts the pup, you need to be VERY clear with them about the dog's condition. Tripawd dogs can do anything pretty much but it takes vigilance and exceptional care by the human to ensure they live a pain-free life with good health. If you have a prospective adopter, send them here and we can answer any questions they have. You'll see many similar situations in this forum post where I reassigned your discussion.
Please let us know what the vet says OK? Don't wait, get there asap.
