Hello everyone, my name is Dan and I have been looking for a dog to adpopt for quite some time. Yesterday I found a black lab in a shelter here in San Diego that had the bottom half of his leg missing. The shelter did not believe it was amputated, the said it looked more like a birth defect. Are there any long term health issues for dogs like this I should be aware of before I adopt?

Hi Dan, I think it is wonderful you would consider adopting a 'special' dog.  Three legs won't stop him or even slow him down.  I'm not in the animal health field, but I wouldn't think you would expect any health problems based solely on the defect.  I'm sure Pam (our resident vet) can offer an opinion from a medical perspective.

Oh good for you. I know a Viszla who is about six years old and lost a hind leg as a puppy….she hases tennis balls, plays, and goes for walks with her humans every day in the neighborhood. She's as “normal” as can be.

I'm not a vet either but I can't think of anything to worry about either. If you adopt him, keep him lean, maybe consider some joint supplements as he ages to stave off arthritis.

I have a friend who is an agility judge and said she gave High In Trial to a tripod Border Collie a couple of months ago, in fact I think it may have been San Diego. Go to YouTube, or on this site, and look at the amazing things some tripods are able to do!

Hi Dan - wow, I love hearing that someone is considering adopting a special dog. You will not regret it! These guys are so special and rescue ones even more so - they KNOW that you saved them and they will be faithful to you forever.

I can't add any other suggestions other than what's been said regarding your question...consistent check ups with your Vet obviously are important  and just listening to your gut.

Let us know what you decide to do!

We can't wait to see pictures if you bring this guy home....

Good luck!
