am contemplating adopting a tripawd great dane. She was born with 3 legs and has rickets in the other three as per the shelter she is currently in. I have a few concerns:-

  1. is rickets curable? or manageable with medication?
  2. What extra care do such puppies require?
  3. what all do i need to know.

I really want to adopt her. But want to be absolutely sure about what all is required.

Thanks for joining, and bless you for considering adoption of this pup in need. We don't know about care the rickets, but caring for a three legged dog is not much different that any other dog. Please review Jerry's Required Reading List for the best advice and tips.

Rickets could refer to many nutritional diseases but in a dog this young I would be most worried about the balance between calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D.  Supplements aren't usually needed but a quality large-breed puppy or all-life-stage adult food is important.  Is she getting along well with 3 legs now?  If so proper diet should be all she needs.  If not she may need supplements based on a  veterinary exam.

am highly distressed....have 4 dogs currently. 3 pugs (2 females and one male) and one boxer female. the girls are territorial - even the 6mnth old female pug is getting to be fiesty... So am torn between logic (territorial females + a tripawd baby girl = disaster) and emotional turmoil ... i see her pic over and over at the adopotion center site and feel even more inclined to get her home.... dont know what to do 🙁

You just need to do what is best for the dog. And if that is *not* introducing her to an unstable pack, then perhaps the best thing is to stop visiting the shelter website, or, try other ways to help the shelter find a new home. Bless you for your concern, and best of luck to you!
