Hello, our dog is 6 days front amp post op and yesterday he was having tremors while awake and while sleeping. We could not get him up to go for his 5 min potty breaks. I texted our vet emergency # and the Dr. said it would be serotonin tremors from the Trazadone and discontinue use. His last dose (2 pills) was yesterday 2/15 at 7pm. He woke up this am and was alert and ate, drank and pee’d all over the floor. It seemed he tried to get up but wasn’t there yet. He is finally sleeping and still has the shakes. How long does it take for the tremors to stop after taking the last dose?
I am guessing the vet has had him on this 2x a day since surgery on Tues and they stated that he was eating and drinking fine but he was not trying to get up and go out to go potty. When we brought him home of Fri he did whine when he wanted to go outside and we were able to get him up and out with two of us helping him. And after yesterday am he was not getting up. I also read the a side effect of the trazadone could be muscle rigidity and/or muscle weakness. His limbs have been swollen from fluid and seem stiff. I am wondering if this could be a side effect of trazadone as well which could prevent him from getting up/trying to walk on his own. We are sad and frustrated because we don’t know how long it will take for him to get going on his own. Especially reading that dogs get up and walk on day one after amp surgery.
Any help is appreciated.

Oh yikes! I've never heard of such a thing, thanks for posting so we can all learn from it. I'm so sorry about this and hope he's feeling better. I'm keeping my paws crossed that our Fairy Vet Mother Dr. Pam can weigh in. Stay tuned.

So good news. We were able to get him up to go potty with the slings. He still has shaking (which is not all the time) but I read that it can take 48-72 hours to get out of the system. We are hoping this was the issue and can celebrate little victories today.

He ate at the vet and is eating every meal. No problem eating, drinking or taking meds.
just got a pic from my husband that he made his way to the bedroom ( with help) and got in bed. Happy to see he is choosing to go back to his routine. We took the bed frame off so the mattress is on the floor. Whew! Small victories!

Okay, NOT a Vet! Onlh making comments based on my experience with Trazedone used on RARE, RARE ocassion kn two different dogs in rhe past.
I know I asked you on some of your other posts whate meds he was on. Now I see he is on Trazedone twice a day for almost a week!! Is your dog highly anxious, anxiety ridden?. I dont kmow wjat other meds he was on for pain. Trazedone is given in high anxiety cases' as a SEDATIVE and causes lethargy. To me, this explains ost ecerything avout hom mot walking or getting up on his own.
Anyway...and again....NOT. professional comments at all, but on the ocassion I did HAVE to use it, it was very much a sedative effect, made them not sure footed at all, didn't want to get up, and caused some trembling. This was just my experience twice, and may be completely unrelated to your issue!

Thanks for the input benny55. Very helpful. He is on anti-biotic, carprofan, acetomenaphin, and gabapentin. We were also given acepromazine to use only if needed if he is trying to be more active than he should.

You usually only see serotonin syndrome if the dog is on multiple drugs that affect that pathway such as trazodone plus tramodol. Trazodone is usually pretty benign and is safe enough to use in heart failure dogs so maybe the dose was too high or it was a reaction with other drugs. The acepromazine has more side effects although I often use it after spays and neuters in young dogs to keep them calm post-op.

Hi benny55, we definitely saw major improvements after takinfg him off the trazadone. He wouldn't get up on Saturday at all, even to go pee. The shaking has stopped. Again, like the vet said above it could be the dosage. Today GOB was in the sling and he hopped outside so fast he hopped out of the sling and managed to stand on his own.
I also asked our surgeon about the acetomenaphin and he said it was okay but NOT OKAY for cats. And to only use it under vet supervision.

There is a safe dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol) for dogs although you do still have to keep an eye on the liver. There is no safe dose for cats; they will get acute liver failure from this drug.
