Hi I am still struggling about my dog Santo. He is 3 leg mix of rotwailer, akita and labrador. He is been diagnosed with ACL knee and they decide to do TPLO surgery. Because he use only last beck leg he get also meniscus. When he was puppy he get old fracture of broken pelvis since they find out was late to fix it. Because of calcification on his beck part of his beck one of his left nerv canals get already close but other side are still working. Well I study a lot of that all health problems but I try to find more help if somebody have experience cause I have one option go for surgery or put him sleep. He is only 5 y old and what all I know TPLO surgery is painful and cost a lots of risk. I am skeptical that he have already chronic inflammation in that leg cause he use it the most and it s only one beck leg that he have. I am wondering if I choose surgery I know I have to carry him cause he will be not able to go on that foot. I am scared if he will be make it and I don’t have to put him to sleep after surgery cause of pain and healing process will not go well. Somebody can help me with that?

Victoria, welcome to you and Santo. I'm sorry you are in this tough situation.
My first question is: can you get another opinion or two? There are times when a TPLO surgery can be avoided if a good rehab therapy program is prescribed. Oftentimes, weight loss is also necessary and makes a BIG difference.
So it's good to talk to another veterinarian specializing in orthopedic surgeries (not at the same clinic where you got the first diagnosis), and another practitioner who is a canine rehab therapist. If you'd like help finding these vets where you live, let me know.

How much does your dog weigh? He may be able to handle a TPLO just fine but a less aggressive surgery is a TTA is somebody is doing that in your area. Even a lateral suture repair may be acceptable depending on your dog's weight.

Hi Santo is 43 kg hm big boy. Well I went to few vet specialists, and they say they can’t help better will end up for him. Santo get team of specialists in the same hospital where he was amputated. They decided TPLO but no guarantee after surgery cause he will be first 3 legged dog in Norway. I am getting all instructions from Dr. Kevin A. Drygas to make sure after surgery he will be fine. I will do all best for my boy but I see he want to fight and I will do with him together.
