My cat is 17 years old, still pretty active and playful. Loves to cuddle and get pets. I have had her since right after college so basically my entire adult life. I found a bump on her back leg, took her to the vet and it’s a soft tissue sarcoma. The vet gave me options of monitoring it, removing it and doing radiation if they can’t get it all or amputation to be sure they got it all. She has early renal disease, it was has no progression in the past 3 years. At her vet appt the dr said her heart and lungs are healthy. I am not concerned with cost, only that I make the best decision for her.
I don’t know which choice to make. The vet said there’s a risk surgery could make her renal disease much worse. I am nervous an amputation at her age could be difficult to her to adjust to. I still feel she has a lot of life in her. Looking for some insights or suggestions from anyone who has had to make this decision with an elderly cat. Thank you!

Did the biopsy report give a grade? If it is low grade I would definitely leave it alone but if it is Grade III (high grade) then I would do at least an abdominal ultrasound first to see if it is in other organs prior to considering amputation.

I don’t think the vet mentioned a grade, but I will call this week and ask. If it is in other organs then I’m guessing it would be pointless to do the amputation?
