My husky mix Scout had his right forelimb amputated last Friday (so we are 1 week 1 day post-op). He came home with a body wrap and went this week to have the wrap changed. The gauze has pulled back a bit exposing his stitches, and I think the whole body wrap has slipped back a bit. It's making the part around his neck really tight - which is my concern and reason for this post.

He goes back in two days to have the bandages changed again (or removed, I am not entirely sure, I'm very pregnant so my husband has been taking him to appointments). I want to know if there's any harm in cutting the part off around his neck? As long as we keep the stitches dry, is this okay to do? My husband said they acknowledged that the wound might get exposed as the week goes on, so I don't think it's totally a surprise. I have been on hold for an hour with the clinic so hoping I might get some guidance here!

I have seen a lot of dogs sent home without a cover on at all, so thinking it's not totally necessary? I hope my photo attachments work!

It looks like the incision isn't covered very well, so I think it would be OK to remove. You might be able to put an old t-shirt on Scout to cover the incision if that would make you feel better. As long as the incision stays clean and dry, it should be OK.

Thank you for your reply! I just snipped it and put a shirt on him - I feel much better about it! I appreciate it 🙂

I agree; the part of the incision that I can see actually looks pretty good so a t-shirt should be fine.
