Hi everyone. I was wondering if any of the vets or experts here knew about how high an amputation can go. My French Bulldog has her second MCT on the inside of her left front leg, midway between elbow and shoulder. Is it possibloe to get an amputation that high? I know it is in humans, but dogs...I don't know.

Jerry had his entire scapula removed along with the leg. This is perfectly normal, if warranted based on the tumor location. Some vets believe keeping the scapula helps protect the the chest cavity, but Jerry never had any issues. Leaving a lot of the front leg can also cause balance issues because the dog may have a tendency to try and use what is left of the leg. That being said, I am no vet or expert, just speaking from our experience and what we've heard in these forums over the past few years.

For mast cell tumor you want to get wide margins so I would take the entire leg including the scapula.

My Jake had his tumor (and fracture) in his proximal humerus... They removed his whole leg, but left the scapula.

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Charlie's cancer was right by his 'wrist' but they removed the whole leg, including the shoulder (I am assuming that is the scapula). No bone remains. They placed the muscle over where the shoulder was. He now has some scar tissue there, but otherwise, I think it's pretty common to take all of it.
